Every year, in October, we see everything turn to pink as we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month. It seems odd for me to use the word celebrate and breast cancer in the same sentence. However, for me personally, creating awareness around this topic is truly a celebration and a wonderful achievement for breast cancer research. On December 21, 2018, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. In my case, the cancer was caught very early and it was very treatable. Treatments we...re certainly not as extensive as they could have been had it not been caught as early as it was. I know this is not the case for everyone and it has made me acutely aware of the importance of early detection. I am so thankful for the advancements in breast cancer research and technology and the increased awareness around early detection. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Early detection includes doing monthly breast self-exams and scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms. Breast cancer research expands awareness and has saved lives. Let’s join together and reach as many people as we can to raise awareness around early detection. I encourage organizations, public and private, to embrace a culture of philanthropy. This is a great opportunity not only to raise awareness, but to promote employee engagement, especially during this time of virtual everything! Wear pink to your virtual meetings, create a site internally to share breast cancer statistics, start a fundraising page or support organizations like the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Early detection saves lives! Kristin Navarro, HR consultant, CPS HR Consulting
