From AAJA! We are excited to announce that AAJA-Los Angeles is sponsoring paid summer internships at several SoCal newsrooms. Details are below about the first of four internships. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college or university or have graduated within the last six mo...nths. Questions can be directed to [email protected]. Good luck! AAJA-LA Pasadena Star-News Application deadline: Friday, March 14 The Asian American Journalists Association/Los Angeles will again sponsor a paid summer internship for a student journalist at the Pasadena Star-News this year. The intern will cover news and cover key topics in Pasadena and the rest of the San Gabriel Valley for 10 weeks. Applicants should be equipped to work from their homes and/or the field amid the coronavirus pandemic. On-scene assignments are likely, aligned with Los Angeles County Public Health orders for safety. The intern will be supervised by a Southern California News Group editor, matched with a mentor from the staff and receive a free AAJA membership. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college or university or have graduated within the last six months. The San Gabriel Valley includes some of Southern California’s most vibrant Asian immigrant communities. The intern’s primary responsibility will be writing about trends and issues in those communities, though the internship may include some general assignment work. The intern will work 30 to 35 hours per week. The role may include evening and weekend shifts. Fluency in an Asian language is a plus but not required. Deadline is midnight PST on March 14. Send cover letter, resume and clips to Southern California News Group Senior Editor/L.A. County Thomas Bray, [email protected]. Please include references. Questions: 951-756-3738.

Unpacking. Prop 16 and examine all sides. Dr. Mary Yu Danico quoted here. He actually said folks are becoming woke to systematic racism not awaken. A yes vote is acknowledging systematic and institutional oppression. Remember, White women benefited the most from affirmative action. This proposition is about access to underrepresented groups, it is not only about race.

For the approximately 1 in 6 Americans who are married to someone of a different race or ethnicity, you can thank attorney Bernard S. Cohen for his skillful adv...ocacy in the 1967 Loving v Virginia case. I interviewed him in 1992 for an article I wrote for the Washington Post on the 25th anniversary of the Loving case, and he modestly said that the Lovings were the heroes. However, I know as a lawyer that he did a very skillful job in litigating a case that has benefited not only interracial people but also the LGBTQ community and anyone who supports the right to love the person you choose. RIP, Mr Cohen, and thanks for making our world a better place. [Photo of Mildred and Richard Loving by Associated Press] ########### FROM THE ARTICLE: Virginia state flags were ordered to fly at half-staff to honor the late Bernard S. Cohen, a lawyer who won the landmark case that struck down state laws forbidding interracial marriage. You may not be familiar with Cohen, but the legacy of his work is all around you in a country where mixed-raced couplings are now common, accepted and celebrated. Today, at least 1 in 6 people who marry in the United States are wed to someone of a different ethnicity or race. This was far from the norm when Mildred and Richard Loving turned to Cohen to take their case two generations ago. Richard was White. Mildred was Black and Native American. Acting on an anonymous tip, local sheriffs burst into their eastern Virginia home at 2 a.m. in July 1958. Richard Loving, blinded by flashlights, made his way to the dresser to find their marriage certificate. I’m his wife, Mildred explained to the intruders. Not here, you’re not, one of the officers replied. The couple was arrested for violating the state’s Racial Integrity Act. The ruling by the Caroline County judge who found them guilty provided a window into prevailing perceptions about race at the time: Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. . . . The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix. The Lovings were sentenced to a year in prison unless they left Virginia for 25 years. They chose to depart. As the case made its way through a series of appeals, the Virginia Supreme Court doubled down on the primacy of racial purity, sayingthe state had an obligation to prevent the obliteration of racial pride, the corruption of blood and a mongrel breed of citizens. Yes. The court used the word mongrel. After hearing about the passage of 1964 Civil Rights Act, Mildred wrote to then-Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy asking if the new law gave them new freedoms. Kennedy referred the case to the American Civil Liberties Union, where it landed on the desk of Cohen, a young volunteer. Along with co-counsel Philip J. Hirschkop, Cohen filed a lawsuit challenging Virginia’s anti-miscegenation laws and took the case all the way to the Supreme Court. Cohen and Hirschkop argued that Virginia’s concerns about racial integrity were essentially a one-way street, meant only to protect the alleged purity of the White race. The line of argument was brilliantly understated; the justices on the high court certainly knew full well that over centuries, the same people who fought for the purity of their bloodlines were fathering children across the color line, sometimes born of love but more often born of violence and coercion. Racial purity was a proxy for racial superiority. In June 1967 the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that prohibitions against interracial marriage are unconstitutional a decision that set a precedent for the June 2015 rulingthat legalized same-sex marriage. When you hear about the flags flying at half-staff in the former cradle of the confederacy for a Jewish lawyer who defended the rights of a mixed-race couple, you might be tempted to say, Oh my! How far this country has come. Indeed, it would be hard to imagine this kind of honor just a few decades ago. But we should also remember that it was just a few decades ago that interracial unions of the kind we see all around us in our neighborhoods, at our holiday tables or family Zoom calls were illegal in 16 states until 1967. This is not ancient history. And it is wrong to think that the fear and the hatred that fueled such laws are entirely in the past tense. https://www.washingtonpost.com//e2b5b9a4-16f1-11eb-82db-60 https://www.nytimes.com/2020//15/us/bernard-cohen-dead.html https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mildred_and_Richard_Loving https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loving_v._Virginia

Some of you took Dr. Danico’s Asian American Film, Music, and Food class and was introduced to producer and writer Chucky Kim. Please check out his post. He is such an inspiration. From Chucky Kim when i was a kid, like late elementary age, i would go with my mom to the korean blockbuster, which was this bootleg operation with like 20 vcr's dubbing these videotapes mailed weekly from seoul. i always picked the latest edition of , which is one of the longest-standing kpop... showcases... kinda like an ed sullivan thing. it was the highlight of my week, watchin koreans jus kill it. it's a trip watching this video that aired a few days ago, with one of the songs i wrote being performed by one of asia's biggest pop stars. i literally achieved a childhood dream. or rather, at the time, lil chucky didn't even know how to play an instrument, and i'm currently wondering how he would feel. it's a truism now, but the saying, "remember that what you have now is what you prayed for yesterday," is one of life's greatest lessons. they never told you that it would be this difficult, nor did they mention how ordinary things can feel at times. but it reminds me, especially in light of 2020, that our future is a function of our present choices. keep going, keep playing.
