Sonora and Her Diving Horse. Calgary Stampede 1925 - The horse dived about 50 feet into a tank of water about 10 feet deep and Miss Carver stayed on the horse d...uring all of the jump. She lost her eyesight in 1931 when her horse landed badly, but by 1932 was again diving horses. She retired in 1942 and died in 2003 at the age of 99. See more

THIS IS AWESOME! Dear Young Rider - No one outside of your family and friends feels sorry for you. Now that you hate me, let me expand on that for everyone out...side of the equine world, riding horses is a frivolous, elitist activity that is reserved only for vacation adventurists and the wealthy. No one cares that you feel limited in your ability to meet your goals because your parents won’t buy you a $250k horse. Now that we’ve got that unfortunate reality out of the way, let’s move on to those of us inside the horse world. We also don’t feel sorry for you. While you complain about your lacking budget, crappy horse, bias judges, inattentive trainer, subpar footing, distance to shows, inopportune ride order or whatever other obstacle you face, we counter with one response - RIDE BETTER! Having a bad show? Horse acting up? Feeling unappreciated? How about you RIDE BETTER? Believe it or not, very few people competing in equine events have unlimited financial support and no one wins all of the time. Though money does help, most riders have to work for years to be good (much less the great). They sacrifice everything else they have in their life to pursue this crazy obsession. They get second mortgages, run up credit cards, work seven days a week, have side gigs and hustle to ride anything, anytime, anywhere just to gain experience and exposure. They ride to exhaustion and then pick stalls and fill water buckets. They cancel their hotel and sleep in the tack room because they need new boots. They feed other people’s horses to pay their nomination fee. They miss their families and often ruin personal relationships. They do all of this and more just to be able to RIDE BETTER! If you are lucky enough to get to go to any horse show, watch these people who ride 6, 10 or more horses. Watch how little they rest, how quickly they move between tasks and how well they ride. Then emulate that work ethic. Be the kid who will ride anything and will learn from every ride. Be the kid who is at the barn early and leaves last. Be the kid who will ride all day and then clean, groom and help others. Be the kid who analyzes videos of your rides and learns from others. Be the kid who always smiles and is ready to go back in the ring. Be the kid who asks for the opportunity to catch ride. Be that kid and you won’t need to buy a $250k horse someone will eventually bring that horse to you! When you RIDE BETTER you will be recognized and rewarded. You won’t always get the placing that you want or even deserve but I can guarantee you that riding well will bring you its own awards. It may take you longer but if you truly are a great rider, people will notice you and opportunity will be brought to you. And you will know you have learned to RIDE BETTER when you no longer want anyone to feel sorry for you.

When solving behavioural issues with horses, you have a number of options available to you. One is to correct the behaviour, but another is to allow the horse t...o do it, and make the outcome that the horse is trying to achieve become difficult. This is one of the ways of using "making the wrong thing hard and the right thing easy". The word "hard" doesn't mean your put pressure on them like many people think, it means it makes the wrong thing difficult for them to achieve. In this video I show a large Fresian who's intended outcome is to push into me. By electing not to engage in that behaviour, there ends up being no winner or loser, just two parties who come to an agreement. The most important part of this video, however, is not about the technique. It's about your inner energy and body language while doing it. As you will see in the video, you have to calmly elect not to engage with them, but you cannot be defensive, and try to prevent them from pushing into you, nor can you be fearful, and shrink away from them. Doing either of those would not make this exercise work. This is an exercise of non-judgementalism, you cannot judge what the horse is doing or it will affect your energy and affect the outcome. You can't be scared or frustrated, but instead, just be present and respond to what it is happening. It's definitely of the harder skills for many people to learn, as it goes against our nature, but it is a key element to working well with horses.

Estelle O'Brien wrote this about Neil's book. I love this book! I am reading, re-reading, reviewing and memorising. Neil cuts through all the fluff and the ...bull and puts it exactly where it needs to be - succinct, straightforward and easy to understand. But being easy to understand doesn’t mean lightweight. This book contains deep and proven truths that will revolutionise your understanding. (And no, I’m not being paid by Fear Free Horse Training!). I’ve studied all the stuff that’s out there, and Neil’s approach is like a breath of fresh air. It makes many other approaches look like the Emperor with no clothes. Who can relate to my friend Brett Kidding? Brett shows some of the things we can all recognize, ways resorted to without training when we just try to get a ...horse on. The simple idea of just thinking you’re going to ‘put’ or ‘make’ your horse go in the trailer is what often leads to failure or problems in loading or traveling later on. Like everything with horses I like to teach to them before doing to them. I try to begin with always having the thought of ‘how can I teach my horse everything he needs to know about the trailer?’ And how can I teach him to start to ask if he can please go in the trailer today so I can take him somewhere. If you want to know what steps I take to teach a horse everything he needs to know about a trailer, join me Thursday (8pm GMT +1). I'll be giving a webinar you can join for free: https://www.trtmethod.com/webinar-trailer-loading/ And if you can’t make it, sign up anyway, because I’ll send you the replay.

Several days ago, a young filly named Holly G became separated from her family inside of a fenced area. After several attempts to access her, volunteers trained... in rescue ultimately set up a chute and were able to successfully load her into a trailer. In the meantime, other volunteers were searching for her band and thankfully found her family nearby. They closed the horses into an area temporarily so a reunification could occur. When the trailer with the foal inside pulled up to the area where the band was enclosed, a wild mare whinnied to her baby and even stepped right into the scary trailer to retrieve her. After the foal nursed for a good while, the band happily moved off together. Please join us in expressing gratitude to the INCREDIBLE team of dedicated volunteers out on the Virginia Range in Nevada who are making a difference for wild horses every single day.
