It's Tiara Tuesday!! The Oriental Circlet This tiara was commissioned in 1853 to the Garrard jewelers by Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha for his wife, Q...ueen Victoria of the United Kingdom and purchased for around 860 at the time. The design of this tiara was inspired by a collection of Indian jewelry that had been donated to Queen Victoria a few years earlier, but although this the tiara can be divided into two parts: the Oriental and the Circlet. As for the Oriental part, as the name implies, the elements that compose it are Mughal arches and lotus flowers, elements of oriental origin and tradition. The part of the tiara called "Circlet" derives from the way in which the tiara wraps itself almost completely around the head of the wearer as a headband would do. The tiara is a large piece of jewelry, and the original diadem in addition to the 2,600 diamonds and more was accented with opals, all set in a gold frame. The creation of this jewel obviously led to a dispute over the ownership of the diamonds contained in it, as Victoria supplied diamonds that once belonged to Queen Charlotte, and their ownership was disputed by the King of Hanover, and when it was decided that they belonged by right at the Hanoverians this tiara had to return to the workshop and in 1858 the diamonds were replaced by a mix of diamonds extracted from other royal jewels and some new ones from Garrard. The tiara underwent another design change by Queen Alexandra who when she inherited it she had the opals replaced with rubies, also reducing their size from 17 arches to 11. From that moment on, the tiara was never retouched, and was later worn by Queen Mary and Queen "Mother" Elizabeth, where the latter made extensive use of it in the last years of her life. And finally when Elizabeth died in 2002, the tiara passed to Queen Elizabeth II, who wore it only in 2005 on a state visit to Malta. via Royality Tiaras on Facebook
