PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY. Your BIG toe is A BIG deal!! - It is the key to transferring power from the ground up into your body during sport. Hallux Rigidus can create a chain reaction and be a cause of your lower back pain. Hallux Rigidus simply means "stiff big toe". It is a common condition that affects the big toe, causing pain, decrease in flexibility, and stiffness. The disorder is progressive and gets worse over time. Pain and stiffness is caused by a gradual... loss of elasticity in the ligaments and tendons surrounding the big toe. There may also be degenerative changes of the joint including loss of joint space and spurs. Patients will complain of stiffness and pain in the big toe joint. The range of motion may be limited in all planes, but patients will mostly complain of not being able to bend the toe backward, also known as dorsiflexion. Treatment in our office includes gentle traction, mobilizing the joint to increase range of motion, applying a type of kinesio tape called Rocktape, and teaching our patients how to decrease the painful range of motion felt when performing daily activities. Commonly, people will let this type of thing "go", which is a big no no!! If you catch this early it is much easier to treat and the outcomes are better. As you know from being patients at our office, Dr. Z and Dr. Jessie are functional chiropractors and understand that one part of the body can affect another. We chose to highlight this condition because it is often directly correlated with lower back pain. Because this condition is gradual and progressive, patients may deal with it for awhile, unaware of the subtle changes that the body is making to compensate. Typically, patients will start to put more weight on the outside of the foot, which changes how they walk, stand, and move. This moves up the body and before you know it, the pelvis gets off kilter and the lower back starts to hurt. In addition to hallux rigidus, there are other conditions of the foot and ankle that you should always tell your Chiropractic Sports Physicians about. These include a history of a fallen arch, plantar fascitis, or sprained ankle. They just may very well be the missing link in your persistent lower back pain! Luckily for you, your sports chiropractors know just what to do!!

Are your glutes activating? These words have been all over the news this week with former world number one Tiger Woods, claiming that his glutes would not activate as the reason for withdrawing from the PGA tour event at Torrey Pines this past weekend. I don't think this girl has that problem. ( See picture below ) More on that later. Activation of a muscle essentially means the ability to fire or contract that muscle. In the case of the glutes, this becomes a very importan...Continue reading

I love seen recuperation progress on clients with injuries, a 70 year old client had a soleus (a broad muscle in the lower calf, below the gastrocnemius, that flexes the foot to point the toes downward ) injury while walking uphill, This type of injury is very common on people who were very athletic in their younger years and some times the achilles tendon gets rupture do to a strong muscle but not a very flexible tendon. Keeping muscles and tendons flexible with myofascial release massage technics helps to avoid this injuries.
