Today I woke up 10 years sober...... and I honestly don’t know how that happened.. Time really does fly by. I never intended to live without drugs and alcohol. I was conditioned to think that they soothed me and solved life’s problems. But after a stint of waking up hungover after numerous blackouts and trying to piece together what happened I decided to do a juice cleanse. And somehow I was invited to a meeting where they gave me life lessons on how to manage life on l...ife’s terms, clear and sober, without drugs and alcohol. They taught me to stay sober when I woke up, lived my day, and how to put my sober head down on my pillow... one day at a time. Today I wake up with gratitude rather than hungover with my head over the toilet. Today I get to be of service and show up for others rather than stay stuck in my story of personal pain. Today I get to go out and enjoy life rather than waste my time piecing together last night and wondering where in the hell I left my car. Today I live in self-love and peace. Today I am free. New flower sprung on my porch garden last week..... I’ve been waiting for them to bloom. I saw the stems sprout up and the closed buds. They finally opened and now share so much vibrant beauty...... then perhaps in a few days they will be gone..... Our last day of 2020..... this pretty much sums up this year for me. 2020 taught me how to slow down, find the power in the pause, how to stay resilient, the importance of participating in community and action no matter what, take up surfing and healing more with the ocean, how to lean deeper into prayer and faith, the importance of serving others, keeping the ceremonies going even though they might be different, and how to surrender in deeper ways I could never imagine. I wrote this as an Artist Prayer for a course I’m currently taking called The Artist’s Way ~~ For quotes or prayers I write myself I rarely claim it is from me (- Prakash Nam).
