Happy Anniversary, Andy Greene!! Thank you for the gift of life Read Andy Greene’s Story: On August 2016, Supervising Deputy Probation Officer Andrea Greene ...ran into a colleague Hermina Ban, a Children Social Worker (CSW) from the County’s Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), who and after a brief conversation, mentioned that she had a friend, who had been on dialysis for five years and was on a 10-year long waiting list for a kidney transplant. Ms. Greene wondered why no one had come forward to help. Surely there was a friend or family member who could donate. As it turned out, the friend had a rare blood type. Type O Negative is known as the Universal Blood Donor blood type because the blood cells can be transfused into almost any patient in need. Less than 7% of the world’s population has this unique blood type. Andrea Greene is a member of that exclusive group. This is when fate enters in. I always felt that I would donate something, someday, and this was my chance to fulfill that, Ms. Greene stated. After applying to the UCLA Living Donor Program and completing several days of testing, it was determined that Ms. Greene was a good match for kidney transplant surgery. She underwent successful surgery on February 15, 2017, and returned to work a month later, on March 15th. March is National Kidney Month, a time when the National Kidney Foundation urges all Americans to visit their doctors for a well-deserved kidney checkup. According to Ms. Greene, her decision to donate one of her kidneys came from a genuine desire to help otherssomething she believes most others share. Greene expressed. I felt that this was a way to make a difference in a way I know for sure. Fast forward 2021: Ms. Greene has continued her journey and is a member of the Circle of CORE under the UCLA CORE Kidney Health Program. The Circle of CORE is a patient advocacy group where all members are living kidney donors and recipients who were inspired post-transplant to give back to the community. The Circle of CORE is always available to support other patients and families through their journeys, to educate and empower them on the challenges with kidney disease. Andy has been heavily involved with the Circle of CORE and continues to make a difference in many people’s lives! See more
