It is the 10th cranial nerve, which is responsible for the parasympathetic control of the majority of our internal organs, including the heart, the lungs, and the digestive tract. The vagus nerves are normally referred to in the singular but there are actually two of them. Vagus nerve is the longest nerve of the autonomic nervous system in the human body. Just a reminder that our nervous... system consists of two main parts, the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system is divided into the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The somatic nervous system controls all voluntary muscular systems within the body, whereas all the functions we do not have to consciously control are carried out by the autonomic nervous system. Finally, the autonomic nervous system is divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. You can think of these two branches as the gas and brake pedal in your car, respectively. We are creatures of habit so changing and replacing habits is not always simple.... A habit isn’t something you do consciously. It’s an automatic response to an emotional trigger. You are what you repeatedly do. We’ve created neural pathways for each habit. Regardless if they are healthy or unhealthy habits they: Shape your life Determine the person you are How you spend time Every goal is broken down into habits. Excellence, like any habit, is a daily commitment, not a one-time thing. We need to create new neural pathways to create change and new habits. Often, the hardest part is starting. It takes determination, commitment, and patience to start & change. Understanding how to build new habits is essential for making progress in your life. Decided you want to change? Use these 4 ways to start changing bad habits for good. Start with a very small habit. A silly example: rather than start by increasing your veggies intake to 4 cups a day, increase by 50% of what you are currently eating. Do something easy enough where you can get it done without much motivation. Increase the habit in a small way and gradually improve. Willpower and motivation will increase, making it easier to create new habits that actually stick. Break habits into chunks. Keep each habit reasonable, keep momentum so behaviors are possible to accomplish. Instead of 20 minutes of brisk walking, break into 2 separate chunks of 10 minutes each. Most likely you will slip, but when you do, get back on track quickly. Don’t expect to fail, but plan for it. Aim for consistency, but not perfectection. You can only fail if you quit!
