Many of us feel the desire to shield our children from marital conflict. However, if we have the capacity to model engaging and resolving conflicts in a healthy way, it’s an immensely important skill to impart to our children. Image From: @couples.counselling.for.parents

There is always a reason for challenging behaviors. Our job is to figure out what the reason or reasons may be and to proactively create environmental supports and structures that reduce maladaptive behaviors. In the heat of the moment however, our only job is to remain calm and help the child regain control over themselves. #nobadkids #positiveparenting #mindfulparenting #preschoolers

The goal isn’t to avoid conflict but to model healthy ways of navigating and resolving it. #parenting #positiveparenting #mindfulparenting

Although some "parental accommodation" for anxious childhood emotions is healthy and helpful, a growing body of evidence suggests that too much parental accommodation can make a child's anxiety symptoms worse over time and may lead to debilitating anxiety in adulthood. While we want to begin with acknowledging the fear or distress that the child is experiencing, we must also convey confidence in the child's ability to cope with the anxiety. https://www.psychologytoday.com//over-accommodating-childs

Pushing boundaries and negotiations can be especially challenging to respond to at bedtime when you are burnt out by the demands of the day. Here are some helpful ways to keep those boundaries firmly in place without resorting to threats or punishment. This simple story is one way in which we can explain to children what is happening at this time. Remember to begin by asking what they know and what questions they have. Give them space to reflect on any feelings that come up. Conclude the conversation with a message of hope. Let them know that many people are working hard and speaking up so that there will be a change for the better.

We all have to work actively to listen, understand and teach our children to do better to recognize white privilege and speak out against racism. Thanks to @mommy_brain for this image.
