The organizers of the Annual Concord 5000 run/walk didn’t let the pandemic get in the way of helping the Contra Costa Blue Star Moms. Although the live 5K could not be held this year, race sponsors Diablo Valley Federal Credit Union, Orangetheory Fitness Concord/Clayton, and Road Runner Sports teamed up to raise funds for the Blue Star Moms Holiday Care Package drive. The student design contest was created by Bishop-Wisecarver, an industrial automation company in Pittsburg, CA. The Concord City Council unanimously approved a multi-prong strategy to use more than $900,000 in federal funds to assist residents deemed at highest risk of eviction due to financial hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The city received an additional $935,572 in Community Development Block Grant-Coronavirus funds in the third and final round of funding under the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020. Concord’s allocation was more than $2.2 million in the initial two rounds of federal funding. A registered Concord voter and his lawyer have filed a Fair Political Practices Commission complaint against the city and the Yes on Measure V campaign, saying that the city paid for a campaign-related communication. Until the arrival of winter rains, we are still in the midst of a dangerous fire season. The SCU Lighting Complex Fire, which burned almost 400,000 acres, impacted five regional parks: Round Valley, Morgan Territory, Del Valle, Sunol Wilderness, and Ohlone Wilderness. All told, some 6,000 acres of regional parkland burned. Fortunately, no major park district structures were affected, and there were no injuries.
