Empty Trash you can do this manually, or use an automation app (like Hazel) to empty your trash at regular intervals. I prefer the latter because it allows me 30 days from the time I put something in the trash until it deletes the item. That way I can go back and rummage through said trash can if I realize that I threw an important file away.

Weed Login Items Login items are the apps that launch automatically when you boot up your system, or login to your account. In System Preferences, go to Users & Groups, select your user account, and then click on Login Items. Delete anything that isn’t absolutely essential to startup. It takes less than a minute to do this, and it can shave seconds off your boot time.

Keep liquids away from your laptop. As tempting as it might be to drink coffee, soda, water or any other liquid near your laptop, accidents can happen all too easily. Alternatively, use a cup with a cover on it, so even if it does spill, the liquid doesn't go anywhere. Spilled liquids may damage the internal microelectronic components or cause electrical damage. Short circuits can corrupt data or even permanently destroy some parts of the laptop. The solution is very simple: Keep your drinks away from your computer. Even if you are careful, someone else might spill your drink.

Vinegar Your computer, printer, fax machine, and other home office gear will work better if you keep them clean and dust-free. Before you start cleaning, make sure that all your equipment is shut off. Now mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bucket. Dampen a clean cloth in the solution never use a spray bottle; you don’t want to get liquid on the circuits inside then squeeze it out as hard as you can, and start wiping. Keep a few cotton swabs on hand for getting to the buildups in tight spaces (like around the keys of your PC keyboard).

Mouthwash Out of glass cleaner? A strong, alcohol-based mouthwash will work as well as, or better than, glass cleaner on your computer monitor or TV screen. Apply with a damp, soft cloth and buff dry. Remember to use only on glass screens, not liquid crystal displays! The alcohol can damage the material used in LCDs.

Baby Wipes Periodically shaking out your keyboard is a good way to get rid of the dust and debris that gathers underneath and in between the keys. But that’s just half the job. Use a baby wipe to remove the dirt, dried spills, and unspecified gunk that builds up on the keys themselves. Make sure to turn off the computer or unplug the keyboard before you wipe the keys.

Cleaning Tip: You can use a vacuum to suck up dirt, dust, or hair around the computer. However, do not use a vacuum inside your computer as it generates static electricity that can damage your computer. If you need to use a vacuum inside your computer, use a portable battery powered vacuum or try compressed air.

Tip: Clear Internet data. As you browse the Internet, your computer collects bits and pieces of information that can eventually build up to the point that they cause performance issues, especially on older and slower machines. The most basic way to do this is by using the tools that come with your Internet browser of choice. Microsoft Internet Explorer users on Windows can clear all temporary data by visiting the Internet Options control panel item and clicking the Delete button on the General tab under the Browsing History subheading.

Never, never, turn your computer off with the power switch until Windows has shut down. The one exception to this rule is when your computer locks up and your hard drive is not running (hard drive light is not blinking). In this situation, you can turn the power off without harmful effects to the hard drive. As cutting the power can also result in lost data or Windows files, you should only do this when you have to.

Computer Maintenance Tip: Update Your Spyware Programs and AntiVirus Programs No matter how good your spyware programs and antivirus programs are, their effectiveness is limited if you don't update them on a regular basis. Spyware and virus programmers are, unfortunately, constantly designing new ways to infiltrate PC systems. Check if your spyware remover or virus protection software offers an automatic update option. Automatic updates mean you'll get the protection you need on a regular basis.
