RECOGNIZING and REPORTING ABUSE Mandated Reporter/What it means to you As a caregiver, you may be walking past a resident’s room and see an action or hear some words that don’t sound right. What you saw or heard rubs you the wrong way and you get a bad feeling about it. You look twice, but don’t do anything about it. But it keeps nagging you, so you go back to check on the resident and they are withdrawn and sitting very quietly. What you may have witnessed or overheard cou...ld be physical or mental abuse. That’s why it’s important to recognize the signs. Everyone working in long-term care facilities is legally obligated to report suspected abuse. The purpose of mandated reporter training is to recognize and report abuse and neglect.
