This process involves practicing and identifying distorted beliefs or thoughts while learning to question the accuracy of the data supporting your conclusions so that you can see yourself and your life situation more clearly. You may also increase the capacity to take breaks from over-thinking to remaining attentive to present moment experience.
Somatic Experiencing therapy facilitates the completion of self-protective motor responses and the release of thwarted survival energy bound in the body, thus addressing the root cause of trauma symptoms. This is approached by gently guiding clients to develop increasing tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions. It does not require the traumatized person to re-tell or re-live the traumatic event. Instead, it offers the opportunity to engage, complete, and resolvein a slow and supported waythe body’s instinctual fight, flight, freeze, and collapse responses. SE supports corrective bodily experiences that contradict those of fear and helplessness. This resets the nervous system, restores inner balance, enhances resilience to stress, and increases people’s capacity to actively engage in life.
Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens. In a world that's always on the go, it's important to take time out to "just be."
What is mindful awareness? Mindful awareness means paying attention to our present moment experiences with curiosity, openness and a willingness to be with what is (Winston, 2010 ). Mindfulness is a quality of attention and it is a meditation practice. You may receive guided practice with using your breath or body sensation to help focus your attention in the present moment as a resource to helping with over-thinking, reactivity, or other stress-related problems.
