Thursday, January 9, 2014 by Blair DeMarco-Wettlaufer from, Debt Collection Issues on Both Sides of the Fence; blog on LinkedIn Collection Tip - Coping With The Crazed Debtor If you have experience in the collections industry, chances are you've been involved with a call like this -- a customer gets extremely emotional, they may begin to spit out words you may never even heard of, or even hang up briefly. A great collector will realize that there is something ha...ppening beneath the surface the debtor is dealing with. And find creative ways to diffuse the situation and collect on the debt. According to DeMarco-Wettlauter, remembering that you (the collector) are in charge of the matter. Realizing that you are the authority figure will keep emotions limited to the debtor, allow you to calm everything down, and give the consumer different opportunities to reach a resolution. Participating in the same negative reactions as the client will be detrimental to the overall experience of this and potential future collections. Though a collector may use all previously discussed tactics, there could be instances where debtors get under your skin. When this occurs, ending the call as professionally as possible and taking a walk to cool down is key. If you feel the situation is too poorly compromised, take the next step in the process or transfer the case to another collector in your company. Like DeMarco-Wettlauter states, "it's not worth it to your well-being, your company's reputation, or the reputation of your client" to emotionally go back and forth with clients. All in all, remaining cool and reiterating your authority over the matter will in turn promote respect between the parties involved and potentially collect the obligation.
