A South LA resident talks about her decision to take the vaccine.

Community Coalition 18.02.2021

We trust all of the South LA Black & Latina healthcare professionals who’re encouraging us to get the vaccine. It’s our best shot at ending this devastating loss of life. To find out how to get vaccinated, swipe left. #southcentral #southla

On Tuesdays, City Council, the Police Commission, and the County Board of Supervisors are simultaneously having meetings. It forces us to pick between 3 meetings to give public comment at and it doesn't feel like a coincidence.

Meet LaTanya Ward, who’s a human capital builder focused on healing trauma WITH Black gang members & reentries. She’s also the CEO + Founder of W.A.R.F.O.A (We Are Responsible For One Another). W.A.R.F.O.A. is a violence prevention, education, and healing hub. --- I focus on the healing. I’m a human capital builder. I don’t create the parts - the pieces are already there. I create spaces where people can introduce themselves to themselves to begin healing.... There’s this saying I use in our healing circles: I didn’t come to teach. I came to love and love will do the teaching. We went to the Culver City Stairs for the first healing circle. It consisted of my homegirls from my hood only...we walked up - it was homegirls that didn’t get along, but then there was all this encouragement because the s*** looked like the Great Wall of China & we had to get up there TOGETHER When we got to the top, my mentor who’s an expert in trauma had this white board and we started really talking. We've been so accustomed to communicating physically/violently. I shared with them T.O.M. (Theory of Mind), explaining how we're operating from hella trauma & adopted belief systems/perceptions & WE DON'T HAVE TO. The violence we’re seeing is transgenerational trauma. It’s lifetime trauma. I believe that poverty and violence should be the same definition in the dictionary because they're one & the same. I'm a huge believer & INVESTOR of the liberation of Black people being the liberation of all It’s the equitable thing to do because Black people are massively incarcerated and LA County is the gang banging capital of the world. I unapologetically want to invest in Black gang members. The healing circles I guide [at W.A.R.F.O.A] are a continuation of what I was aiming to do with the Nipsey Hussle Inspired Gang March that I organized in 2019, which resulted in hundreds of gang members being in the same space peacefully. I’m trying to build on our Non-Aggression Agreements: if you see someone, don’t f*** with them if they're not f****** with u, period. We can start there because it's about going from the me to the we at some point." #LetsRedefineWhatTheStreetsExpect #StoriesOfSouthLA #ShowUpForSouthLA

Dangerous Liquor Store --> Market Residents organized to make it happen and they're back at it again to take Eddie's Liquor on Western to a hearing at the County next Wednesday. South LA is home and businesses need to act responsibly. #ShowUpForSouthLA #PeoplePower #southcentral #southla... ROOT CAUSES -- A neighborhood that for too long has not had access to proper investments, healthy outlets, treatment and counseling, coupled with neglectful business owners & ongoing trauma is what creates the conditions for substance use, addiction, and violence.

There's power in how you spend your hard-earned money. As the big chains pocket more money by any means necessary, you can go a different route when you buy your food from a local small business in South LA. Some options: ... 1) Hank's Mini Market at 3301 West Florence 2) Village Market Place at 6569 South Vermont Avenue 3) Hispana Mini Market at 4075 S Main Street 4) Crenshaw Farmers' Market at 3650 W Martin Luther King Jr Blvd on Saturdays from 10am-3pm https://knock-la.com/vons-fires-delivery-drivers-prop-22-e8

Meet Kevin Twin Orange, who shows up for South LA as a peace-maker and gang interventionist as part of Advocates 4 Peace & Urban Unity. LA City Council must significantly #FundPeaceMakers during this uptick in shooting violence. ---... Twin’s for my twin brother. He’s in my memory and work everyday. When he was murdered, it was the sound from my mother won’t ever forget the sound that came from losing a child. It pierced my soul, man. I was kind of involved in the [gang interventionist/peace creator] work before, but I had to have a conversation with God that night. He revealed that he is who he says he is. I knew that this is what I was going to dedicate my life to doing. That night gave me strength, even though it was all really sad. It don’t have to stay this way. It can change. [Outside] people don’t give us too much credit, saying that we don’t care about each other or that we’re not capable of healing our communities. We have some strong and powerful people [in South Central]. There’s more emphasis [in the media] on the bad than the good, but the good outnumber the bad by a large amount. We don’t want the next generation to go through the pain we went through the drug use, the violence ... we want corners safe for kids to go to and from school. This uptick in violencewe knew it was coming. We feared that it might happen. When Covid hit, everything just meshed together. The trauma that people don’t know they’re carrying, it comes out of that. The fear of dying, the fear of being shot, the fear of being hurt by the police, the fear of the pandemic. With these emotions that people don’t know how to control, it turns to trauma and mental health [problems] if it’s not treated. That’s where violence comes from. I want to see us funded because we come from a place of lived experience. We know what’s coming. I don’t look like the people who take Black folks to jail and prosecute them and hurt them. We need money to go toward programs, after school programs, jobs, and mental health. Give us a voice. Give us a chance. #ShowUpForSouthLA #StoriesOfSouthLA

Los Angeles is now the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic and we continue to invest in resources to keep residents informed and safe. Black & Latinx communitie...s continue to be disproportionately impacted by this pandemic. The COVID-19 vaccine provides hope, but we must address the concerns of our residents around the safety of this vaccine. Today, I joined #SouthLA leaders to share the facts & encourage our community to take the vaccine and listen to our public health professionals.

Residents are taking the owner of Eddie's Liquor & Jr. Market on Western Ave to a hearing at the County next Wednesday. They've had enough. South LA is our home and businesses should act responsibly. Eddie's doesn't. There's no security guard and they let drunk customers hang right outside the store, which leads to violence -- in 2017, a shooting outside Eddie's left 2 dead. ... If you live nearby and/or just want to get involved, please keep an eye out - more to come. #PeoplePower #SouthCentral #southla

A huge thank you to County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, who came to our Board of Directors meeting this past Saturday to discuss opportunities and challenges she sees on the County landscape and how centering equity is a priority for her. This vid is a #TBT to our Gala in 2015 when we honored her with the Augustus Hawkins Award. Augustus Hawkins was one of the founding members of the CA Legislative Black Caucus that Supervisor Mitchell was on and definitely deserves recognition during #BlackHistoryMonth. My ultimate desire is to see what I can do to galvanize all the resources in the state of California to eliminate deep poverty. Living that experience as a parent informs every decision I make. - Supervisor Mitchell

Black community organizers and protesters who have peacefully gathered to demand justice for the state sanctioned murders of Black citizens have been targeted, identified and arrested. We join in the demands that the violent, white vigilantes who participated in the attack on the Capitol also be identified and arrested.
