Circle Or Cage? Smart people surround themselves with people who are even smarter, more ambitious, and more accomplished than they are. I’ve had many friends during my lifetime. Stay away from blaming your partner It’s time to talk seriously about the blame game. In a relationship, everyone finds reasons to blame their partner, and the only choice is who deserves the blame. We already shared in a previous post why we blame? Lets see how to stay away from blaming your partner.... 1. Own some part of the problem. When you feel criticized, take a few minutes to acknowledge your part of the problem, however small. If he doesn’t do his share, can you acknowledge how bringing it up every day contributes to his digging in his feet? If she blows up over nothing, can you see how a small comment you made helped set off the spark? 2. An apology can be incredibly effective and disarming. If that’s how you see it, I can understand why you would be upset. I’m sorry it happened that way. When you can stretch and see your partner’s point of view, the mood softens. There is more room for conversation, feelings, new ideas. And ironically, you’re much more likely to get your way. 3. Ask yourself challenging questions. The next time you feel stuck in a conversation, try asking yourself these questions. They can help you change your perspective, step out of the infinite negative loop, and take a new kind of action. Three Kinds of Risk you must aware of to be a leader Based on my analysis, I find that there are three particular forms of possible risks that prevent individuals from stepping up to lead:... Interpersonal Risk: The first problem people raised over and over again was that their relationships with their peers could be harmed by leadership actions. For example, one respondent clarified that "sometimes you don't want to risk that friendship and hurt the feelings of other people," when asked if they were hesitant to step up to lead. Another said they were worried that other entities might "start to dislike you and talk about you behind your back" if they stepped up. Image Risk: The second common fear mentioned by people was that leadership could make others think about them poorly. For starters, one respondent said they were hesitant to lead because "I don't want to seem like a know-it-all." Similarly, another interviewee worried that "it could come across to the rest of the team members as a little bit aggressive, perhaps." Even though both organizations and employees generally claim to admire leadership. Risk of Being Blamed: Ultimately, we found that many people were afraid that if they stepped up to lead, they would be held personally responsible if the group failed. They worried that they would be blamed for the collective failure and that that could cost them a coveted promotion or future leadership opportunities. As one respondent explained, If I were to dictate the work, then the potential bad results could be pinned onto me.
