OMG

OMG has been closed since March 15. It’s been devastating to say the least to be shut down for almost 9 months now, with no end in sight. Our bills continue to pile up. Some people ask us why we don’t open a parklet with outdoor seating. Here’s a few reasons why: Our location on 6th Street isn’t conducive to an outdoor bar. It’s not a Street like Castro or Valencia that would have people eating and drinking outside. Constructing and maintainin a parklet would be very expensiv...e and wouldn’t even return the cost of that investment. We would need to partner with a restaurant for selling food and the logistics aren’t easy. And most importantly, we don’t want to put our awesome staff and our beloved customers at risk. So, our decision to wait for the shutdown to be over, stands. We will ride this out, hoping to see a glimmer of light at the end of this long, dark tunnel. It’s almost the end of August and we still don’t have any indication from the city officials that bars can reopen any time soon. It’s been over 5 months that OMG has been closed. Some bars have teamed up with restaurants to open up outdoor service but we don’t think it’s a feasible option for us on 6th Street. Even if the bar remains closed, a lot of costs just keep mounting. As per Governor Newsom, bars will have to be closed for a much longer period of time. As the months go by, the expenses keep adding up. OMG has been a welcoming spot for everyone, especially the immigrant Latino and South Asian lgbtq folks. Happy Pride!!! As you already know, it’s now over 11 weeks that OMG has been closed. And we still have a long ways to go before we are allowed to reopen. We have been told we may be allowed to open mid August. That’s still 11 weeks from now!!! We at OMG are trying to stay positive through this pandemic. But, it’s hard, since June pride month are usually the lifeline of gay bars when we are able to make up for slow months and pay off some debt. Even in this closure, bills still need to be paid. Many have been generous to help out. Many are going through rough times themselves. If you are would like to support your local gay bar, it would help us get through these tough times, until we get to reopen, hopefully before August. Everyone please stay safe.

The hardworking staff of OMG are left without work during the COVID19 mandatory shut down of bars and clubs by the California government. OMG is committed to paying the staff $5 per hour for the scheduled hours that they would have worked if we were open. Granted that is not nearly enough for them to live on, pay rent and other expenses, considering they depend heavily on tips plus their hourly wages. However, even earning $5 an hour will at least get them basic essentials li...ke food to sustain themselves through these tough times until we reopen. So, we come to you for help. If you can and if you continue to make your regular income during this crisis, and you want to help out our dear OMG staff, any donation would add to their ability to sustain them temporarily. I urge you to donate a small portion of the amount you would have spent at the bar if the bar was open, or the tips you would have given them if the bar was open.
