In 2015 we met Suleiman Bakhit. We were put in touch to build an app that would help him publish anti-terrorism comics in the Middle East. We helped Sulieman build out some software so he could focus on the core of his missionmaking and distributing comics. He used stories to promote tolerance and human rights. His work continued amidst medical complications that followed from violent attacks. He was a friend and a beacon. In particular, he was focused on helping others, es...pecially kids. He said, in our world, we need a way to talk about the violence that we see. We need something to stand for. I’ll miss being able to talk to him about the world and our hopes. I’ll miss his humor and zeal. He truly believed that the world was going to heal its hurts, that we had a good chance, that we can be more courageous. If you don’t believe in heroes, you will not find them. Not even in yourself. Suleiman Bakhit Suleiman passed away Wednesday, August 14th. He is mourned and missed. May we honor him today and always by continuing his work to help kids feel more love, belonging, and excitement rather than shame. He has left us inspired to be more engaged with people and to be braver. Thank you, Brendan Miller, for the illustration and all of your good work.
