Locally, there has been some controversy about the city's logo -- known as the "Raincross". Some say it should be removed since it promotes the Mission Inn or ...because it's a "Christian" symbol. People should learn the history of it and how the double-barred cross has MANY meanings, including Christian and Native American symbolism: "Here’s some background on this beloved symbol: Owner of the Mission Inn, Frank Miller, had the raincross created by one of his architects to be a symbol for his mission-style hotel. The raincross combines both the Spanish and Native American history of our region. It was the City of Riverside that came to Miller around 1908 and asked if they could purchase the raincross to use it as an official City logo. Instead of Miller selling it to the City, he gifted it to them and allowed them to use the symbol without payment or royalties. This symbol has been synonymous with Riverside for over 110 years and Riversiders have great pride in this symbol." The double-barred cross has been around for centuries and isn't just a Christian symbol. It is also part of Native American symbolism. You can find it on pottery, jewelry, and other objects. It is also a symbol for quality, used as a proof-reader's mark indicating high quality work. Going back to the time when scribes copied books by hand. The double barred cross can be found as part of the logo for the American Lung Association, the Roycrofters movement and as part of the Nabisco logo. It's the alchemist's symbol for sulfur or "brimstone". In typography, the double cross is called double dagger, double obelisk and diesis. A double-barred symbol is used In medicine and botany. And yes, in Europe it is one of the cross-forms of Christianity, known as the Cross of Lorraine, the Caravaca Cross and the archbishop's cross. I strongly believe that Frank Miller and Arthur Benton were aware of these layers of meaning -- both Christian and non-Christian.
