Live from SMPD Sky Camera 1, we report rain! A lot of it! So that means you should be driving appropriately for conditions. Headlights should be on, your speed should be safe, wipers should be working, and you need to keep a good space cushion around your car and the next . #GetHomeSafe #SafeStreetsSanMateo

Another proactive traffic stop last night results in one more "Ghost Gun" being taken off the streets of San Mateo. During a traffic stop for a vehicle violation on Fashion Island Blvd. yesterday evening, Officers stopped a vehicle and noticed the driver was acting strange. In plain view, officers noticed numerous zip-lock baggies of a leafy green substance that appeared to be marijuana. Once the driver and passenger were removed from the vehicle, a search yielded a loaded gh...ost gun under the driver's seat, easily accessible by the driver. The driver was arrested and the gun was seized. The term "ghost gun" has been increasingly heard/used across the country as of late, so we figured this is a great opportunity to educate the public about it. What is a ghost gun? (And, no they aren't see through like the one pictured. They actually look like real guns! Much like BB guns do.) It is a firearm that is homemade or a commercial firearm sold without serial numbers and unregistered. They are often made of different gun parts. "Firearms for sale or distribution require a federal license for their manufacture, and must bear unique serial numbers." In 2016, California passed a measure requiring anyone planning to build a homemade firearm to obtain a serial number from the state (register) and pass a background check. These are actual real, working firearms and are just as deadly. Don't let their kitschy name fool you.

Sting Operation Leads to Recovered Stolen Property and Suspect Arrest after Items Sold on Facebook Marketplace Observant San Mateo victim discovered his items taken in a storage locker burglary were listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace. Officer posed as interested buyer and negotiated purchase of stolen items which led to arrest and recovery of most items. San Mateo, CA On Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 4:43 p.m., San Mateo Police began investigating a burglary from a st...orage locker in the 100 block of W. 3rd Avenue. After discovering the theft, the victim began an online search for his items, as several were identifiable. He located two listed on Facebook Marketplace from a subject out of San Jose. Over the course of the next two days, the investigating officer was able to engage the seller as a prospective buyer to purchase the suspected stolen items. A purchase agreement was reached, and plans were made to meet and complete the transaction. On Tuesday, January 12, 2021, in the 5 o’clock hour, our undercover officer was to meet with the seller at Marina Plaza. Additional patrol officers and our Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) were utilized to assist with apprehension of the subject. At approximately 5:17 p.m. the subject, later identified as Tyghe Mullin, arrived and was detained. Mullin had numerous warrants for his arrest out of Santa Clara County. A search of Mullin’s person revealed drug paraphernalia and credit card and other personal information that did not belong to him. A search of Mullin’s vehicle revealed at least four items that belonged to our victim of the storage locker burglary. Mullin admitted to knowing the property was stolen and that he was the subject our officer had been engaging with on Facebook Messenger but denied being responsible for the initial burglary. Mullin was also not the seller depicted on Facebook Marketplace, nor did his name match. We are continuing our investigation into that subject. Mullin was arrested for possession of stolen property and additional charges. As the investigation continues, officers will attempt to locate additional victims and determine who else may be involved in this case. SMPD reminds the public to keep serial numbers or identifying information of valuables. Etch your name or driver’s license number onto items for additional identification. Photos are also helpful. Providing the police with a serial number not only helps us inform other agencies that your property has been stolen, but it also allows for us to reunite recovered stolen property with their owners. ARRESTED: Tyghe Mullin 32 year-old, San Jose Resident CHARGES: 496(A) PC Receiving Stolen Property, 182(A)(1) PC Conspiracy to Commit Crime, 11364(A)(1) HS Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Let’s Talk Patrol San Mateo! Join us for another LIVE session of Real Talk San Mateo on Wednesday, February 24th on Zoom or Facebook Live at 6pm. This hour and a half session will be dedicated to our Field Operations Unit and will include the Chief, Patrol Captain, and our three Area Lieutenants. After they provide you with information about all the different units that make up our Patrol Division and give a brief update on the status of the city, we’ll open the session up t...o Q&A. We invite you to participate ahead of time by submitting questions to [email protected]. That way, these gentlemen can incorporate the answers into their discussion. We will also be answering questions live but ask that those questions be of a generic nature and not specific to any one area of the city. We’ll have an audience from all over San Mateo and would like to avoid talking about area specific issues, circumstances, or situations that may not pertain to this audience as a whole. There will be more opportunities for that type of discussion in the future. By sharing the inner workings of our department with our community, we hope you’ll find it beneficial to better understand the nuances of law enforcement and how these units work independently and collectively to keep San Mateo a safe place to live, work and play. San Mateo Police Department Conducting DUI Checkpoint December 18th San Mateo, CA The San Mateo Police Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint on Friday, December 18th from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on E. 4th Avenue. Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI collisions and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired. During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that d...rivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. As the state continues to work to stop the spread of COVID-19, the San Mateo Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe. The safety of our community is and always will be our mission, Sgt. Craig Collom said. We are still out there looking for impaired drivers because driving under the influence is still dangerous. San Mateo Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Illegal drugs and some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or operating heavy machinery, which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana is legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana not. If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home or getting a sober driver. Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from California Office of Traffic Safety, through NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).

With heavy hearts, we have to share that one of our beloved, retired K9’s Borry, had to be put down this past weekend. Borry worked with his handler, Officer Travis Barker from 2009-2016. Borry was a black German Shepard trained in narcotics detection. When Borry finally retired after serving the San Mateo Police Department for 7 years, he got a K9 brother in Zigi. While Borry enjoyed retirement at home, Zigi joined Off. Barker to continue on Borry’s good work at the PD, until everyone officially retired in 2018. Borry was 13yr when he passed, loved his ball, loved Zigi, and loved Travis. He was a great K9 partner and served the City of San Mateo well. He will be missed.

Officers Aid Homeless Woman and Toddler Son Obtain Temporary Housing San Mateo, CA On Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 10:36 a.m. San Mateo Police Department officers were called by a witness to the bus stop at W Hillsdale Blvd / Edison St to do a welfare check on a homeless woman and her 2-year old son. Officers learned the mother had arrived from Texas recently for a religious mission in Northern California. Unfortunately for her, the housing promised for her mission didn’t... come through, leaving her sleeping at a San Mateo bus stop for two nights. The responding police officers were able to utilize our Homeless Outreach Team (HOT Team), who provide resources to San Mateo’s identified transient population. Through their compassion and the homeless woman’s willingness to accept help, she was connected with LifeMoves, one of the largest and most effective providers and supportive services across Silicon Valley. She was provided emergency housing and a long-term shelter voucher during her transition back to Texas. Thanks to the care and concern of our San Mateo residents, we were able to help this mother and her son. The person who called police and the numerous residents on Nextdoor.com exhibited compassion, empathy, and made efforts to provide assistance to this family. Issues like this one are long-term and impact the community over time. We have taken sustainable collaborative approaches to crises such as homelessness and mental health awareness by engaging in creative partnerships with local homeless advocacy groups, housing authorities, employment facilitators, and public health officials. Our Homeless Outreach Team serves as a model throughout our county to identify and address people experiencing homelessness in a sustainable way. We also recognize our homeless population represents a segment of the most vulnerable, whom we are sworn to protect. San Mateo Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Team are specially trained officers. This team of officers have advanced certifications in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques, lending themselves to the tasks of reaching those most in need. The unit’s goals are to reduce recidivism, create positive relationships, and improve the quality of life within our community. The first step for people experiencing homelessness is connecting with a Homeless Outreach Team officer. We encourage you to report illegal lodging if seen in the city limits of San Mateo by calling (650) 522-7700 or submitting an online form at https://www.cityofsanmateo.org/4228.

Halloween is quickly approaching. Below are some recommendations from the County of San Mateo - Government when it comes to COVID-19 and All Hallows Eve. Trick-or-treating is strongly discouraged. We know, boo ! Unfortunately, another "holiday" will be affected by corona this year, but by getting creative, we'll ensure we keep each other safe and hopefully, get out of this Twilight Zone a lot quicker. We know you want to trick-or-treat and we know you say you'll keep... your distance, but you need to remember, even if you decide to hand out candy indirectly to our ghouls & boos or plan on leaving treat bags out, you have touched them, other little hands have likely touched them, and other moms & dads helping their littles have likely touched them too. Our best advice, create a scavenger hunt for candy in your home. It will keep the kids busy, possibly for hours, lol. You control the amount, you control the safety aspect of it, the kids have fun, and in the end, they got their treats and that's all that matters.
