It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Chico! Our Public Works crews were busy decorating the City Plaza tree for the Virtual Tree Lighting airing Decem...ber 4th at 6pm. While our regular annual tree lighting event can’t be held in person this year due to COVID-19, the Downtown Chico Business Association and the City of Chico are happy to host a Virtual Tree Lighting via our social media channels. The holidays may look a little different this year, but we are excited to be able to continue this tradition for our Chico community.

Chico’s most iconic drive, The Esplanade, began as an old pack trail. Described as the road to Oregon in maps dating back to the 1800’s, and once part of High...way 99, it has served as a vital road for the City’s commerce for over 100 years. With a trolly and train system that once took travelers all the way to San Francisco, The Esplanade has also played an important role in both the culture and commuting of Chico’s residents and visitors. We are honored to have played a part in the history of this important road, as our Esplanade Reconstruction Project 2020 brought important updates to many components of this thoroughfare. From upgrades to the utilities servicing our City from Cal Water and PG&E to new sidewalks, lighting, bike lanes, ADA updates, and an entirely new road surface, we’ve worked hard to bring our community an updated Esplanade that will last for years to come. We hope that you enjoy your drive, bike, and walk down the new and improved road and we would love to hear your favorite memories of the Esplanade!

AMAZING COMMUNITY SUPPORT CONTINUES!!! This week, Franklin Construction began grading work for the relocation of the Silver Dollar BMX facility out at the Airport, next to the Westside Little League Baseball fields! The City of Chico has led the effort in organizing this work, with a vision from City Manager Mark Orme and the Chico City Council, with design being completed by City of Chico Public Works - Engineering staff. Franklin Construction's donated service will enable... the move of this youth sport, so that the current City property at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds can be better utilized to assist in providing housing space for those who are currently unhoused. Santos Excavating will also be donating labor, equipment and material to assist in making this property functional for the BMX folks! It continues to be impressive to see local businesses and people step up to provide needed support on solutions, all the while providing youth amenities that enhance our community!!! See more

This morning, City of Chico Public Works coordinated the installation of safety barriers at several restaurants in the Downtown!!! Not only did the City take proactive steps to allow these "parklet" style outdoor cafes, but led the effort in implementing the safety devices! A HUGE THANK YOU to local contractor Knife River Construction for donating concrete krail and installing these!!! Also, local building contractor Slater & Sons donated water barriers to help save local ...businesses thousands of dollars and establish these spaces for continued use in accordance with the safety guidelines of the COVID-19 pandemic by the State of California. Restaurants will still need to complete outdoor dining cafe permits, but will be able to move that much faster with these in place. It is truly amazing to see the community step up and help one another out in these difficult times! Stay safe and help support local business!!! See more

City Crews started work today on a new crosswalk at Eaton Road and Pendant Place! This much anticipated safety improvement in northeast Chico will provide a safe way to cross Eaton, connecting the nearby neighborhoods with Wildwood Park. We’re installing a crosswalk, adding rapid rectangular flashing beacons (RRFBs), a pedestrian landing pad, and widening the approach into the Wildwood pump track. ... As always, please use caution when driving through construction zones to ensure the safety of our workers as well as the traveling public.

Service with a Smile! Hopefully you have noticed new thermoplastic striping around town recently. Our Public Works - Operations & Maintenance crews purchased a long line striping truck this year and are putting it to use! This year they will put down approximately 20 miles of new striping with our own forces. Our entire roadway network consists of 281 miles. In the past, we have had to bid to contractors that are out of the area (since there are no local striping contrac...ting companies), which would have only been able to perform about 5 miles worth of striping for the same budgeted amount!!! Our amazing Maintenance Workers are happy to do what we can withing our budgetary constraints to ensure we are getting the most out of our tax dollars. PLEASE be safe when driving through construction zones, to ensure the safety of our workers, as well as the traveling public. Thermoplastic striping is used with glass beads to provide a reflective attribute so that driving during weather and dark conditions can be done in a safe manner!!! #constructionfunfacts

The park is expected to be completed in the Fall for the community to enjoy!!!

Work continues this week on our Esplanade Reconstruction project with local contractor, Knife River Construction. The final lift of asphalt is being placed from East Avenue to Eaton road, while we grind of the existing portion from East Ave to 11th Ave tonight. By the end of this week, the entire stretch will have a nice NEW roadway surface with final striping and lighting over the coming weeks! PLEASE drive safe through our construction zone so the crews can go home safe in the morning!!! DID YOU KNOW.....asphalt is placed at approximately 300 degrees before being rolled with smooth drum roller/compactors? Before live traffic can go on it, it must be below 150 degrees! #constructionfunfacts

The tireless work of our staff has resulted in being notified of a $22 Million grant to upgrade the Bruce Road Corridor (SR32 to Skyway)!!! This will have a profound effect on our community and build a piece of infrastructure that we hope will be enjoyed for a very, very long time.
