Loma Ave Project Update / This adaptive reuse project transformed a 1940s commercial building in Long Beach’s Zaferia District. The interior space was overhauled to allow flexibility and maximizing natural light and ventilation. The facade was reimagined with steel-wrapped storefronts and clad with salvaged bricks that are over 100 years old. The first tenant, @lodgebreadco, will be baking bread for the neighborhood. Talk about a glow up! #adaptivereuse #facadedesign #sitevisit #architecture #design #longbeach #zaferia

One of the few large undeveloped spaces left in Long Beach, this parcel could become the largest public open spaces west of Recreation Park for one of the most park-poor parts of the City. This while extending the Dominguez Gap a half-mile south along the LA River. Transforming this vacant land into a public park is arguably the highest and best use for Long Beach.

Our summer team is spending their time-off from school helping us lean into this crisis to support our communities, AND are seeking change from their academic institution to support their fellow emerging professionals, as well as better engage those most in-need.

Camden, a city which for many years has been deemed among the most dangerous in America, ended 2017 with its lowest homicide rate since the 1980s by disbanding the Police Department and reimagining it with a strategic shift towards having officers identify more with being in the Peace Corps than being in the Special Forces in order to rebuild trust between the community and their officers. For us to make the neighborhood look and feel the way everyone wanted it to, it wasn’t going to be achieved by having a police officer with a helmet and a shotgun standing on a corner - Camden, New Jersey’s Chief of Police J. From plantations to redlining to urban renewal and freeways, much of our communities are built upon racism. We must reimagine cities to form the foundations of justice. Rebuild cities to channel our collective spirit toward inclusion. Together, we build better. Build for Black lives. City Fabrick was formed as a nonprofit design studio to help reshape underserved communities in need through collaborative public-interest design, planning, policy development, and advocacy. We l...isten, learn, and adapt our work through the lens of equity and we are listening now: Advocate: We have always supported inclusive, healthy, vibrant, resilient, and just communities. In the future we will more forcefully advocate these values, and support our community partners as part of coalitions seeking systemic change. Represent: Our team reflects the communities we serve. But as there are so few Black architects and planners within our industry, we can and will do more to support professional growth for Black students and emerging professionals. Listen: Centuries of racial injustice cannot be undone overnight. We will listen to our brothers and sister who have been victimized due simply to the color of their skin, while recognizing the multi-generational trauma, and help build paths to justice and healing. Empower: We collaborate with communities to reshape their physical environment to improve lives. In the future we will dig deeper to help build foundations for sustained, empowered communities that shape themselves. We will learn and evolve. What is taking place now is a culmination of the frustration, anger, sadness, confusion, and disappointment that the Black community have experienced since the first boats of enslaved men and women arrived to this nation four centuries ago. As the past week has shown, to be not racist is not enough. We must be vigorously anti-racist. Black Lives Matter.
