Today is Ash Wednesday marking the first day of Lent. Lent means spring. This time refers to the liturgical season. Liturgical meaning: divine worship, the proclamation of the Gospel, and active charity. It’s an ancient observance in the Christian liturgical calendar that lasts 6 weeks leading up to Easter. Lent is a tradition that encourages and strengthens our relationship with God, the 40 days help us remember that Jesus’ fasted for 40 days in the wilderness before begin...ning his public ministry. Ash Wednesday marks the day in which we remember that we come from dust. Genesis 3:19. We recognize that all the we have, including our bodies, are gifts given only for a lifetime. If you have never done or observed Lent that is absolutely OKAY! Knowing that communion with God is the ultimate goal. Everyone is at their own pace and in this time what you choose to give up like candy, sweets, soda, social media, television should help you to focus more or turn more to God. In these next 40 days (excluding Sundays because that’s when we believe that Jesus rose from the dead and is a time to celebrate!), many believers of Jesus practice solidarity as a remembrance with the suffering that Christ endured before giving His life for ours at the cross. Believers no do it in remembrance of Him and to be in solidarity with the suffering that happens in our the world today. (*note for anyone who suffers or has suffered from an eating disorder please ask God what to give up that helps you grow closer to Him. *note for everyone else, let’s not center this season on just food or weight in this time, but invite others to share if the are practicing anything in this Lent season). What are you considering giving up or practicing this Lent season to foster your relationship with God? Access to a free 40 day devotional is linked in our bio!

Hey y’all it’s Fall and this a reminder to be patient with yourself, because nothing in nature blooms all year round! Maybe this is a time or season to take a step back and evaluate where you are at, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually and see what changes you need to make to head into the direction you want to be. In Ecclesiastes 3, says, for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven... There’s a time for everything, what are you doing with your time in this season to take care of yourself?

Grief, loss, longing, fear, conflict, anxiety and change are all many of the words that might come to mind when we think of 2020. Yet this is not the only time in history where we have experienced deep, unsettling in our country or world’s history. Many college students were only babies when the twin towers were struck by airplanes on September 11, 2001. This date changed a lot of what was normal in the U.S., but also across the Middle East and for Middle Easterners living... here in the US. In response to the media’s biased tendencies of showing the perpetrators of the attack, we often forgot to share the stories of the lives lost that day as well as generalize an entire group of people from a similar part of the world. Jesus is from the Middle East. Jesus has brown skin. Jesus’ heart hurt that day for the lives lost and the lives who continued to be affected for years to come across the Middle East as war has struck there since. As our country and our world ache today in our present reality, we also lament the lives lost on September 11, 2001, we lament the hurt that those of Middle Eastern descent have experienced in the aftermath and we remember that we have a God who is our refuge and strength, a present help in trouble We will not fear. Pslam 46:1-2

Today is Labor Day and a lot of us have the day off from school, work and regular obligations. But what’s it about and what does Jesus have to say about rest? Did you know Labor Day was created to remember the labor movement that happened just before the turn of the 20th century? Labor Day is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers and was made an official federal holiday in 1894. A day to rest was God’s idea. At the end of the creation story, ...God takes the seventh day to rest; to enjoy and delight in His creation, if God can rest, surely we can too. If you’re looking to learn a little more about the Biblical meaning of sabbath check out @thebibleproject (link in the bio) has a video on God’s heart for rest and sabbath. The video journeys from the Old Testament as the Israelites were slaves all the way into the time of Jesus; how He comes as the Lord of the Sabbath, to reclaim true, good rest and renewal for His people. Sabbath was created for rest. A day to remember who God is, a day to remember what God has done and delight in God. On the Sabbath we get to remember that our identity doesn’t come from doing but from being; being with God, being who God has made us to be. In a culture of self-care and treat yourself days let’s cling to the reality that that we were not made for rest, but God made rest for us
