Learning to swim the Montessori way Hi parents! It’s Lindsey here to chat with you about how we structure our learn to swim curriculum. I believe that children have a strong drive to learn and do things independently. I also believe that children develop at very different paces, and it’s unfair to compare children by age. ... Our curriculum begins by observing your child and their relationship with the water. We then create a personalized lesson guide, with opportunities for small successes. We allow the child to lead, as we gently guide them toward achieving goals. After working closely with children who had extreme water fear/trauma, I’ve learned that gentle, confident guidance (rather than constant pressure), is what children need to thrive in the water. Progress may seem slow from the outside, but your child will surprise you with a breakthrough of confidence after being given the reigns to choose activities that they’re interested in, while being provided gentle guidance. If you have any questions, or would like to sign your child up for lessons, send me a message to book a consultation today!

Happy Sunday! Let’s talk about Parent-and-Me classes! This class is designed for swimmers 6-18 months of age, and is 15 minutes in length. We recommend booking at least 10 lessons, so that you and your child can fully absorb our curriculum. ... During Parent-and-Me classes, we ask that at least one parent/guardian joins the instructor in the water. We do this because: The parent/guardian is the primary learner during these lessons. Our goal is to build a healthy foundation with your child in the water, and set YOU up with the knowledge to practice and expand upon what your child learns. Your baby feels more comfortable with you around Why are mommy-and-me lessons so short? At this age, your child’s attention-span is short. As mentioned before, the parent is the primary learner during these lessons. Each lesson, your instructor will demonstrate an activity, and guide you through the rest of the lesson as you practice with your baby. After each 15 minute lesson, you will feel confident to practice the activity alone with your child, without pressuring them to continue practicing beyond their natural limit. Our curriculum is written to accommodate babies at all stages of development. We prefer to follow the child’s interests in the water, and offer them developmentally appropriate learning activities that match their interest. If you have any questions, we’d be happy to chat! Send us a message today!

Hi folks! Today we’re going to break down the first obstacle that you may run into with your child when they learn how to swim. Seperation Anxiety What is it? ... Child becomes distressed when a parent, guardian, or safe person is not near, especially when starting something new (like swim lessons), in a more dangerous area (like the pool). When might it occur? May happen anywhere from 6 months to 4 years of age. This differs depending on the child. Why does this happen? -In infancy (6-12 months) babies develop a sense of object permanence. This means that they are aware of when things are there, and when they are not. When they notice that their parent is not present, they may have feelings of anxiety. Don’t worry, at this age we recommend parent-and-me lessons, with at least one parent/guardian present. -Once a child reaches 12 months of age and beyond, they do develop a sense of independence, however they may feel very attached to their parents when in a new setting with a new person. At this age we begin to have one-on-one sessions with kiddos, and this may cause some anxiety at first. Again, don’t worry! We’ve got all the tools to help your child feel safe and comfortable in the water. What can we do about Separation Anxiety? - Create a consistent swim lesson routine. - Before lessons, talk to the child about what might happen during the lesson, such as: Your swim* instructor is coming to help you learn to swim*! You’re going to get into the swimming* pool. **Saying a key word 2-3 times, such as swim/swimming helps them to recognize what’s going to happen. -Affirm the child that they are safe and brave. - For children 12 months and older, it generally takes about 3 lessons for them to get into the groove. Be patient! - We never recommend bribing kiddos, or punishing them when they don’t want to swim. Every day is different, and we will work through this together! Citrus Aquatics uses a gentle, patient approach, following your child’s natural development. We understand that your infant/toddler is still developing and learning each day, and we’re here to safely help them build a strong foundation in the water as they grow. We hope this helps you understand a little more about Separation Anxiety, and how it pertains to your child’s relationship with the water. If you have any questions, please feel free to send us a message! Stay tuned for our next post!

Hello Citrus Aquatics Family! Due to the ongoing Covid situation, we’ve been unable to utilize our local community pools in order to serve families who don’t have pools at home. Drowning is the LEADING cause of death for kiddos ages 2-7. Drowning can happen in the pool, bathtub, lake, ocean, ANYWHERE! Every family deserves to have peace of mind, knowing that their kiddo(s) are safe in the water. ... We’d hate to turn a family away because they don’t have access to a pool. So, we’re reaching out to YOU for help! If you have a pool at home, you have the opportunity to help a little one learn to swim and even save their life in the water! Please reach out if you’re willing to loan out your pool for a package of 10 lessons, 2-3x per week. Anyone who is willing to loan out their pool for a lesson package will receive a voucher for one free swim lesson (can be given to a friend/family member if we’ve already taught your little one how to swim). Thank you all for your consideration in helping families in your area have peace of mind. We hope to hear from you!

Hi! It’s Lindsey here to break down our process of Parent-and-Me lessons. If you have a little one who is 6-18 months, I always recommend that at least one parent/guardian joins in with the lessons. Why is this? We design these lessons with two main goals in mind: ... 1. Build a solid foundation for your baby in the water 2. Teach YOU (the parent) how to maintain that foundation, and build upon it on your own! During Parent-and-Me lessons, will teach you how to help your child learn to float, kick, paddle, blow bubbles, bob underwater, and how to kick to the surface when underwater. These are all key skills that will build a healthy foundation for your little one to thrive in the water for years to come! Do you have a little one who needs to learn to swim? We’d love to help. We still have availability in July, and August is currently open for bookings! Send us a message today!

Hi everyone! I’m Lindsey, the owner and creator of Citrus Aquatics. I started this business in 2017 after swimming competitively for 14 years . My career as a swim instructor began when I was only 12 years old, volunteering as an assistant swim instructor for the YST Starfish program. ... Over my wonderful years of teaching group classes, I began to have parents pull me aside and request private lessons for their little swimmers, so I thought I’d give it a go! When I started working one-on-one with kiddos, my passion for swimming and water safety grew even more. That’s when Citrus Aquatics was born! Since 2017 I have helped over 100 families in the Inland Empire area have peace of mind as their child confidently (and safely) plays in the water. In March 2019, I became a mama to a very sweet little boy, Jeffrey . When Jeffrey had his first bath at 2 weeks old, I found myself using the same procedures as I would in a swim class. Thanks to 10 years of experience teaching little ones, I knew exactly what to do to help mine succeed. What I realized, though, is that not all parents have this knowledge of swimming and water safety! So, I created an online course: Helping Babies Love the Water, which I’ll be launching this summer! The course helps new parents navigate water safety and swimming basics for babies, right from the bath tub. Thank you all for your support as I continue to find new ways to serve our community and help parents find peace of mind. For swim lesson inquiries, or questions about my new online course, you can email me at [email protected], or send me a message here! Happy swimming!
