We are proud to partner with nonprofits throughout Santa Barbara County who provide critical services to members of our community in need. One such partner is Unity Shoppe, who recently held their 34th annual Unity Telethon to benefit a variety of programs in place to help local families struggling to get through the financial, physical and emotional impacts of the pandemic. Chumash Enterprises donated use of house light and audio equipment, as well as Team Chumash members to assist with set up and break down for the event. Thank you to all of the hard-working staff and volunteers who came out to make this event possible, and for your ongoing commitment to service within our community.
Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Foundation is mindful of the importance of enhancing programs, extending accessibility and broadening the scope and reach of cultural and recreational institutions. We put a focus on culture and recreation, and look forward to sharing our culture with you when our museum is complete. Originally premiered in June 2017, this segment of Chumash Life shares the story of the tribe's 40+ year journey to create a Chumash museum of our own.
Giving back to the community has always been a tradition of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. Our elders taught us many important lessons in life including the fact that a distinguishing characteristic of the Chumash is our spirit of generosity. We call it 'amuyich. Established in 2005, the goal of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Foundation is to make the community it serves a better place for all of its residents. Through our Foundation we partner with local 5...01(c)(3) organizations, placing particular value on activities and programs that expand opportunities for the least advantaged, protect our environment and enhance the lives of youth. Back in January, Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians leadership had the privilege of touring the grounds of Rancho Alegre where work continues to be done to restore facilities destroyed in the 2017 Whittier Fire. The Los Padres Council, Boy Scouts of America was a recipient of the 2019 Chumash Charity Golf Classic, which raised $100,000 to help restore this beloved community resource.

It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of Barbara Tellefson, the founder and president of Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara. Barbara devoted her life to caring for the most vulnerable members of our community, working tirelessly behind the scenes to build and grow Unity Shoppe into the critical year round community resource that it is today. Her light has touched countless lives, and we are all better for knowing and having been known by her. Barbara, your spirit of g...iving will live on in all of us who have been inspired by your life's work. We are humbled and honored to have been able to call you friend. https://www.independent.com//unity-shoppe-founder-barbara/
Each year since 2004 we have proudly supported the efforts of the Central Coast Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots campaign to bring awareness to the children and families who benefit from this incredible program. The annual event would normally include a festive benefit concert and public celebration of the organization, which couldn't take place this year due to the pandemic. While we couldn’t get together and enjoy a concert in celebration of the work Toys For Tots does... for our community, we’re proud to remain partners with an organization that provides such a positive impact on children in our area, said Kenneth Kahn, Tribal Chairman for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. https://www.independent.com//santa-ynez-chumash-donate-25/
