The Man Upstairs (A Good Word) Lyrics by Stan C. Countz August 18, 2017 [Verse 1] She had gunny sacks wrapped around her feet... She smiled through two cracked brown teeth It seemed it'd been a while since she'd had enough to eat Her cart was parked by a "no parkin'" sign I said "How ya doin'?" she said "I'm fine" But I could see she'd been livin' on the street I was afraid that she was hurt, so I asked her what was wrong She rearranged her skirt and said, mister are you God? [Chorus] I just got through praying for a sign from above I've been unlucky in both money and love I've been thinkin' 'bout not drinkin so much So I was prayin' that I'd feel His touch I opened my eyes and there you were You asked me if I was fine and I said "sure" I guess the man upstairs must've finally heard I need to hear a good word [Verse 2] She said "It's not that I don't believe" It's not that I don't have needs It's just sometimes I need a hand I said "I'll do what I can but I'm just a man" She reached out and took my trembling hand I said "I'm sure the man upstairs understands." He was crucified and nailed to an old rugged cross Pierced in his side and knows the pain of loss [Chorus] I just got through praying for a sign from above I've been unlucky in both money and love I've been thinkin' 'bout not drinkin’ so much So I was prayin' that I'd feel His touch I opened my eyes and there you were You asked me if I was fine and I said "sure" I guess the man upstairs must've finally heard I need to hear a good word [Bridge] I said "Is there anything that I can do? Can I drive you to the mission?" She said "Mister if you only knew Only knew what I was wishin'... [Chorus] I just got through praying for a sign from above I've been unlucky in both money and love I've been thinkin' 'bout not drinkin so much So I was prayin' that I'd feel His touch I opened my eyes and there you were Askin' if I was fine and I said "sure" I guess the man upstairs must've finally heard I just needed to hear a good word I guess the man upstairs must've finally heard Now I've heard the good word

We were a nation of farmers and hicks Played with pickup trucks and pick up sticks Got our kicks on Route Sixty Six Playin’ chicken not politics Have we gone to...o far for it to be fixed? If we’ll hit our knees and hit the bricks If we’ll take our hits and take our licks Maybe we can fix what’s broken It won’t be as quick as we were hopin’ But we’ll nip it in the bud if we stay open Why try to fix it if it ain’t broken? So let’s stop our bitchin’ and mopin’ We need to get on with fixin’ our life Marriage is between a husband and wife Let’s put behind us the stress and strife Because the truth cuts just like a knife But it's still the truth nonetheless We need to hit our knees and confess We've turned our backs on our Lord and Savior No wonder our kids have such bad behavior We need an old fashioned Holy Ghost revival We need to turn off the TV and open our bible We need to seek first the kingdom of God To acknowledge our sins and confess our flaws If my people, who are called by my name Will stop making excuses and passing the blame Then from heaven will I hear So seek me while I'm near Reach out and take my hand And I will heal your land Return to me and bow your knees And stop doing whatever you damn well please Come unto Me all you who are heavy laden When you're at your wit's end and your hope is fadin' For my burden is easy and my yoke is light Compared to the yoke of sin and the burden of spite So stop doing evil and start living right And walk by faith, not by sight. -- Stan Countz
