Lesson #2 You might not have noticed it because it became part of our culture, especially since the rise of social media. It’s more noticeable on the inside but if you think about it, you will realize you have seen it. You might be a part of it. It has surely been a slow but definite move to chip away at the authority of doctors. They started by calling us providers. Just like any other industry. Cable, telephone, water services, nail salons, etc. They are all providers. An...d so, administrators at hospitals, with no knowledge or understanding of what it takes to be a doctor, but who needed to demote doctors so they could have the authority to dictate how treatment is rendered, started calling them providers. Almost immediately their authority in the hospitals and clinics eroded. And then came the general public and other providers who didn’t go to medical school, or residency, had never been at the bedside of a dying patient, had not been called in the middle of the night at the emergency department to admit a patient on the brink of death and have never felt the legal responsibility that comes with prescribing life saving or life prolonging treatment. People who had never been in a profession where you have to bat 1.000 all the time or you lose your license or a life or both. This group of google doctors gained knowledge at weekend courses, on Facebook and YouTube and they come, armed with real knowledge, unbiased information, not tainted by contact with Pharma. They spread a disdain for doctors. Elevated their real knowledge above that of the provider. And the rest of the society ate it up. Where are the they now? How come they are not there intubating, making life and death decisions for themselves and their patients? Have essential oils lost all their powers? Is fixing the thyroid and adrenal gland not enough anymore. Did we run out of non-GMO sunscreen? A time to allow those who have sworn to first do no harm has come again. I see my colleagues who, in the face of personal danger, run to the sick and not away from them. What motivates them is a sense of duty and honor and humanity which they bring to work every day, even before this all started. Allow them to be Doctors. Allow them to do what they were called and prepared to do. A thank you would occasionally be in order. See more

Lessons from the crisis. I will try to share some of the lessons I see as I navigate this crisis as a physician. Hopefully we will come out on the other side better and live in a better society. Lesson #1 Have a primary care doctor who knows you and you can trust. In times of crisis you will need your doctor the most and will be the least likely to get help unless you have already formed a relationship. NEVER go without having a doctor again.

Healthcare in the United States is at a crossroads. Things need to change. Concierge/direct primary care medicine is the answer. Here is a clear example: patient comes to my office after having many symptoms suggestive of an autoimmune condition. He does not have insurance so we had to figure out how to do everything at low cost. He spent about $300 for about $3000 worth of care. I do take the credit for providing him with the highest level of care available today. But here i...s the sad part. Even though I know how to provide this care for only $300, if I worked in the system it would be impossible to not spend $3000. The system simply does not allow doctors to do that. The schemes between the pharmacy benefit managers, labs and insurance companies ensure that money is spent at a ridiculous pace and it goes to their pockets.
