To commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month (9/15 10/15), our art teacher, Araceli, taught students to make paper mache Alebrijes. These are whimsical animals that... often have horns, antlers, wings and fins. Many feature detailed patterns and have exaggerated body parts with dramatic facial expressions. Each one is unique but all are brightly colored. A renowned indigenous Mexican artist, Pedro Linares, first created these creatures after seeing them in a fever induced dream. Seeing these unusual creatures in his dream startled him so much that he woke up, thus breaking his feverish coma. Making Alebrijes is now a celebrated folk art tradition all over Mexico.

Happy National Pharmacy Week to our CHMC pharmacists and pharmacy technicians! Thank you for the important role you play in promoting the safe and effective use of medication with our patients. Fun Facts: Coca-Cola was invented by a pharmacist named John Pemberton. He carried the jug of the new product down the street to Jacob's Pharmacy where it was sampled and pronounced "excellent" and placed on sale for 5 cents a glass as a soda fountain drink. Another pharmacist, Charles Alderton, invented Dr. Pepper. Pepsi was also invented by a pharmacist, as was Vernor’s Ginger Ale by Detroit pharmacist James Vernor. #hellohumankindness #supportcaliforniahospital #californiahospital #nationalpharmacyweek #frontlineheroes #downtownlosangeles #dtla #southparkla

Meet Abby Usayiwevu, BSN, RN, CIC , Manager of Infection Control at California Hospital. During this time of COVID-19, Abby and a team of helpers have worked tirelessly to keep our employees and patients safe, not only from COVID-19, but from many other infectious diseases as well. She also maintains our data and reporting to many agencies helping to track our numbers. Abby continues to encourage all of us to wear a mask, stay physically distanced, and wash our hands often. S...he also encourages employees to be extra vigilant when on breaks and during any workplace celebrations. It can be easy to let your guard down during those times. It's National Health Care Supply Chain Week! What a privilege it is to recognize our CHMC warehouse and supply chain staff during the current crisis. This is a team of dedicated professionals who are making sure that our staff has access to all essential PPE, as well as all other equipment and supplies, which will keep us safe and protected during this pandemic. The warehouse is the portal through which all of our critical equipment and supplies are received and then distr...ibuted to the floors. Everything from Band-Aids to face masks to big medical equipment like CT scanners, goes through their capable hands before it comes into use on the floors. Each week, an average of 962 products are received and an average of 3,993 items are stocked on the supply carts. That’s a Herculean task, even in the best of times. Delivering supplies takes our warehouse staff to every part of the hospital, so their good work touches everyone here. In tracking and receiving the supplies that keep us efficient and productive, they are also part of the bulwark of our Stewardship pillar. Not only is everything meticulously tracked, but they also must make sure that it arrives to us in a manner that keeps us safe and compliant. More than ever right now, they are part of the frontline heroes who make healing our patients the focus of their lives. Thank you and Happy National Health Care Supply Chain Week! #hellohumankindness #supportcaliforniahospital #californiahospital #dignityhealth #healthcareheroes #nationalhealthcaresupplychainweek #dtla #downtownlosangeles #soutparkla
