Chico State Art Shop 31.10.2020

Hey folks! Finally fixed the problem that was locking me out of the page. Thanks Taylor! Facebook upgrade went sour. Had to switch back to the "Classic" version. I am going to start trying to post any updates to the Covid situation as I get more info from Kendal Hall. Here is a response to a querry from Geoffrey that will let you know how things stand now:... We are still waiting to hear what access I will have next semester. Our guess is that I should be on campus during the semester, but we have no idea if I will be able to get in before it starts. I am planning on setting up as much access as I can get away with. Laser, 3D printers, vacuum former, and the cnc router will be accessible in the same manner as before the shut-down. Students will upload their files and I will print/cut, carve etc the file, then get the product to the student. At this time, hours of access are undecided, but I am planning on opening as much access as possible. Some students may be able to gain operational access to some of the equipment after training, but that process is based on University Covid policy and they have not gotten to this level of policy yet. As for the digital lab and printers, we are still in the dark as to University policy on student access to these areas. The printers would probably have to be accessed through a print tech. The computer lab access hasn’t been determined yet, nor do I believe there is a plan for it yet. I do believe the university is making some computers available to students without good internet access, so I could see them allowing access for software issues too. We are looking into that. I don’t foresee much access to the wood shop, unless the student is fully autonomous, meaning they, and I am confident that they know the machine so well that they require no supervision. It is hard to safely monitor use from 6 feet away. Long push-stick? Same goes for the metal shop. I planning on attempting to fire up the foundry, but there are some hurdles that I need to jump before I can suggest that this will happen. I foresee that grinders, welders, etc. can be utilized with proper adherence to Covid guidelines. We are still awaiting direction from Kendal Hall on all of this, so things may change. I hope this helps with your plans for the upcoming semester. Pass this information along if you like and feel free to contact me with any other questions you may have concerning the shop and Department technology. Hang in there, adapt, and create. DB
