This article by Ken Moses, PhD explains how a parent may experience the reality of a life with a special needs child. While the language is a bit outdated, his descriptions of the myriad of emotions that make up this experience are profoundly resonant. He states that parents with a child born with a disability may initially "grieve for the loss of dreams that are key to the meaning of their existence, to their sense of being. Recovering from such a loss depends on one's ability to separate from the lost dream, and to generate new more attainable, dreams." Generating new dreams can be challenging and difficult. It is important to have community and connection along the way! http://www.pent.ca.gov/beh/dis/parentstruggle_DK.pdf
