Happy New Year my foodie friends. Korean culture has a very special tradition of bowing to our elders on New Year’s Day, eating lucky dumpling soup, and playing a board game that tosses sticks to move your marker around a square map. Despite Covid quarantine, I wanted to be sure we safely and creatively kept up the tradition. After bowing to the elders, they give advice and lucky money to the kids. (The kids were excited that FaceTime bowing ceremony was still happening, alon...g with lucky money via Zelle, Venmo, Apple Cash. Technology to the rescue. Hahaha.) cultural lesson over. I was inspired by the cute hand pies that I’ve seen. I had some leftover homemade mango coulee and green apples, so my kids worked together to bake their first pies to present to homebound grandparents for a social distanced happy 2021 NYD lunch. We ate in their back porch and the grandparents ate in the kitchen still able to see the kids through the window. I made to traditional rice dumpling soup and a chives omelette egg dish. And the kids made Apple cinnamon Carmel hand pies and mango hand pies. @pamperedchef Everything was delicious, grandparents were delighted, and I’m so proud of how well my kids worked together to make perfect pies. Taking a childhood note from my mom and how she used to make us homemade ice pops using these plastic makers. I got fancy by pouring in one juice then freezing it at a tilt then adding the second flavor. That how you get the stratification and not a solid blend. Tip: don’t fill the first flavor past the tip of the plastic stick or you won’t be able to put the cap on.
