I read something during the blur of quarantine, that a little addition of red in a painting elevates everything. That little statement resonated with me and I think I may be coming around on Red. Red has not been one of my favorite colors - I’ve often felt a bit of a struggle in how to use it and given the choice- have always chosen blue over red- it just felt too hot, flashy and dramatic, in comparison to its cool and soothing counterpart. But as with everything else, it ...comes down to scale and proportion (along with the realization that it doesn’t have to be an either/or) - and the wise words of the late Vesta Kirby, my wildly eccentric and incredibly brilliant color theory professor at UC Berkeley (who I hear in the back of my head at least once a week)... color is relative meaning the colors adjacent to the color impact that color and your impressions of it and it’s surrounding colors. Red makes this blue and white palette so much more interesting. Evolving is acknowledged and in progress. A literal story of when life gives you lemons. This painting in December when I was feeling intrigued by bright yellow and patterns - and thought it was basically finished back in January, but during quarantine I’ve been painting a lot! And felt the need to rework the lemons. While mixing paint I realized I could use the palette knife to paint as I wanted something less perfect and there we go, on day 59 of quarantine I finally finished this one. Painting is a form of ther...apy, as well as an exercise in pushing yourself - not towards perfection but towards creating the best version. I made a pretty little foraged bouquet yesterday during our afternoon neighborhood hike and was feeling pretty good about finally getting the knack of forget-me-nots (not wilting) when Pepper came along this morning and ate it! Another example of blue making things so much more interesting, and soothing for the eye (and mind). We added this custom @fromentaldesign wallpaper to a subtly elegant monochromatic foyer and it upped the game quite remarkably.
