There are times when a person makes a forever difference. On March 14, 1979, Robert J. Lagomarsino introduced a bill in Congress designating the five islands of San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, and Santa Barbara and surrounding waters as a national park. The bill passed and on March 5, 1980 was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter. We are so sorry to hear of his passing -- and so grateful for his efforts.... More happy news! The brand new beautiful pier at Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island is now open! A bigger, stronger, safer pier offering access to a wondrous world where housecat-size foxes scamper through fields of Seuss-like flowers, and moon and sun shine down on, well, nothing. Our hearts break for our lost wild lands but our heartfelt thanks go out to the impossibly brave firefighters fighting to save them.

As Channel Islands National Park Superintendent Ethan McKinley succinctly puts it, This is a big deal. Fifteen volunteers who work to maintain the native plant garden outside the Channel Islands National Park Visitors Center recently received national recognition, chosen as the winners of the prestigious National Park Service Hartzog Volunteer Group Award. No one is more excited than Park Superintendent McKinley.... This is a really fabulous award, says McKinley. We’re talking seventy-three years of combined giving. I’m totally in awe of what these folks have done. It’s definitely time to celebrate. In 1970, NPS Director George B. Hartzog, Jr. established the NPS Volunteers-In-Parks program. During Hartzog’s tenure (1964 to 1972), 70 sites were added to the National Park System, and he championed historic preservation, urban recreation, interpretation and environmental education. Hartzog also recognized the need to make it easier for citizens to donate, without compensation, their time and talents to the NPS. And that is precisely what so many Channel Islands National Park volunteers do. Heartfelt congratulations to the Hartzog award winners and heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers!
