Today was a big day for our client, Rudy Castillo. He was barely 23 years of age in 2005 when he played a marginal role in a drug deal robbery gone very bad. Eventually, he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parolea natural life death sentence in prison. With the stroke of a pen this morning, the judge in his case granted the relief that we had sought in our habeas corpus petition filed on Rudy‘s behalf. His sentence was reduced to 26 to life, giving him an ...opportunity at parole. But it gets way better, and this is just the first step toward a two-step process of getting him out of prison, hopefully by the end of the year. We will now dismiss his pending appeal, go back into the trial court and petition the court to resentence Rudy to the underlying robbery. When that relief is granted, he will be coming home, free after 16 years of incarceration. He has made tremendous use of his time in prison and has done some amazing things inside. Can’t wait to greet him at the gate and to see what lies ahead for him. #SB1437
