The History of Romney and Lamberts Estate, St. Kitts Meeting of the Assembly St. Kitts British Colony December 15, 1834 Meeting of the Assembly of Gentlemen... It was Messers Richard Challenger, one of the gentlemen of the assembly the (Great Grands Of Edgar Oscar Challenger), who wrote an article in the Newspaper, "The Advertiser" in July of 1834 called "Fair Play". Challenger challenged the conduct of Magistrate Olfbert in a report during the Assembly on trying to get 30 labourers to work the estates above, despite the fact that the Labourers were free, to sign papers of obligation not knowing that Mr. Challenger had already first announced to the Labourers of the Romney and Lamberts Estate of St. Kitts that they were free as of August 1, 1834. It was a Magistrate Robert Olfberts and a Mr. Cardin who tried to force Cuffee (Kofi) to sign documents and Mr. Cuffee (Kofi) replied to the Magistrate, "No, I will not sign, Mr. Challenger said we are free." Cuffee was detained but later released. During this date in 1834 the Government Headquarters was located on Victoria Road Basseterre. The Challengers owns the properties on the corner of Princes and Church Street and surrounding buildings in front of and in the immediate neighborhood on Church Street. Richard Challenger was the father of John Thomas Percival Challenger, who build homes for the newly freed labourers on a portion of Challenger lands known as Challengers and gave these homes to the newly freed African Labourers of St. Kitts. Some of the homes still stand today in their original state, while most of them have been renovated by the families. Edgar Oscar Challenger, continued the work of his ancestors by joining the St. Kitts Labour Union and the Legislator in 1938. The Challenger family has always played a very significant role in the social, political and economic development on the island of St. Kitts. The last Challenger contribution is by Edgar Oscar Challenger, who took the time to carefully journal the historical events of St. Kitts in real time during his 95 years of life. Mr. Challenger was didactic and contributed to foreign students seeking information on the Caribbean, Africa and European History. He was also great contributor to the Islands Academic and Social Affairs. He was a long standing member of the Mutual Improvement Society (MIS), tackling political, social and economic issues affecting the development with the goal of strong black businesses and leadership. Despite low to no turn out Edgar Challenger was determined to keep the flame alive for the Mutual Improvement Society. He always described it as a round table discussion where matters affecting the islands population could come and be heard and receive help. Edgar Challenger always explained that the round table was important because it did not put one member of the community above the other, they were all equal when they sat at the round table. The MIS meetings was held every Wednesday in the Challenger family property on Market Street until his vision failed and he could no longer walk. It was this act of arming the labourers with knowledge by Richard Challenger followed by the act of John Challenger of Challengers building homes with land free if cost to the newly freed that led to the loss of the Challenger businesses and properties. The Challengers by the actions they took in favor of the labourers prevented further enslavement by the planter class. Challengers on the other hand were severely punished. This triggered a series of nefarious transactions by Magistrates and Registrars laying claim to the family properties. This led to loss of livelihood employment and businesses. As this transpired, the family had no recourse as the judicial, administrative and executive branches of Government looked the other way. These nefarious transactions continued with the premature demise of John Oscar Challenger (the father of Edgar Oscar Challenger) in 1916 lasting until the death of his wife Louisa Emelyn Challenger, Edgar's mother in 1953. Even though Edgar Challenger was a broken man he battled through life the soldier he was, doing what he knew was right and that one day the truth will come to light and the wrongs righted.

THE IMPORTANCE OF JOURNALING. They speak from the grave. 1905 - 2000 Some days I enjoy reading my Dad's Old Journals Edgar Oscar Challenger. Especially sin...ce he started journaling since he was a young man. The daily entries teaches about what was happening in the early days which has influenced our Nations activities today. Especially in relation to crime. I recently read where my Dad had a police confront him refusing to present a warrant under the disguise of collecting a debt for a 3rd Party in New River, Nevis. The officer proceeded to threaten to arrest my Dad, collected the $13 debt and proceeded to take my Dad's Two horses, despite a bystander telling the officer, "you cannot confiscate his horses and Still collect the debt." This made me wonder, who polices the police. Also, who polices the friends and influencers of our leaders? See more

CHALLENGER FOUNDATION PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE A COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATION The Challenger Foundation is preparing to start Community Based fund raising in collaboration with the Challenger International House Museum. The Challenger foundation has been in existence since 1841. The Challengers took some of their ancestral lands in the Town of Challengers and built a community of newly emancipated Kittitians. To date St. Kitts has reaped the rewards of such an action of fo...resight which has produced some of St. Kitts-Nevis most productive citizens, like lawyers, governors, etc. Challengers Village stands as a proud representation of our nation's ability to function as an independent entity without obligation and indebtedness to others to do the thing we are capable of doing ourselves. Let us take the lead of our ancestors and the early pioneers of Challengers Village and recognize our national power. See more
