IT’S A DIFFERENT WORLD TODAY. IT’S TIME TO PLAY OFFENSE. Asserting Our Judaism in a Society Ready to Hear Our Message The long and colored story of the Jewish people speaks volumes of oppression and denied opportunity. A debate between Mordechai and Esther coupled with Mordechai’s apparent outrageous behavior set the stage for a dramatic shift in thinking: it’s finally time we wear our ideals loud and proud. #TodayInJewishHistory 5 Tevet - Verdict Awards Library to Chabad, 1987 Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn (18801950), the sixth Rebbe of Chabad, amassed a priceless library. In 1986, Chabad’s ownership of the library was contested by the sixth Rebbe’s grandson, who claimed inheritance rights. The case landed in U.S. Federal Court and, on this day, the court decided in favor of Chabad. The judge ruled that a Rebbe is not a private individual but a communal figure synonymous with... the body of Chasidim, and thus the library belongs to the movement. Moreover, the Lubavitcher Rebbe (Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak's son-in-law and successor) maintained that it is inappropriate to speak of inheritance rights for a Rebbe who devoted his life to inspiring others to Torah. If the Torah that he inspired continues to be learned in increasing measure, his essence is very much alive. The Rebbe urged that this day be celebrated with an increase in Torah study and the acquisition of new Torah books. See more
EVERY VICTORY IS WORTH CELEBRATING You Don't Have to Win the War, So Concentrate on the Battle What is Chanukah? asks the Talmud. Far from this being a simple question any Hebrew School kid can answer, the Talmud challenges us to ask what it is that we consider to be the primary lesson of the Chanukah miracle. Look to the candles and remember that it’s not so much about winning as it is about fighting. Join us on Wednesday at 12:00 pm.... Join Zoom Meeting: www.chabadirvine.org/torahclass See more

Today in Jewish History: Assassination of Gedaliah (423 BCE) Tishrei 3rd is a fast day mourning the assassination of the Jewish royal Gedaliah ben Achikam, governor of the Land of Israel for a short period following the destruction of the First Temple. Gedaliah's killing spelled the end of the small remnant of a Jewish community that remained in the Holy Land after the destruction. They soon fled to Egypt. (According to many opinions, the assassination of Gedaliah actually occurred on Rosh Hashanah, but the commemoration of the event is postponed to the day after the festival). Fast ends: 7:14 PM
