Sleep is powerful stuff. In addition to helping your body recover from exercise, it is vital for immune system functioning. If you don’t get enough sleep or don’t sleep well, you may be more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus. Fruits, veggies and whole grains are full of fiber which is food for the community of microorganisms that live in your gut. Keep them fed like you would good houseguests! Those microorganisms play important roles in health and keeping your immune system running strong. There are also plant based compounds in these foods that can have positive effects on the community of microorganisms in your gut. Alcohol disrupts immune system functioning which can impair the body’s ability to fight infections. Our immune system needs zinc. And in fact, research shows impaired immune functions due to zinc deficiency. Overt zinc deficiency is not common in the U.S. Groups at higher risk for low zinc status include those with GI diseases, vegetarians (plant sources of zinc are not as bioavailable as the zinc from animal foods; vegetarians may require up to 50% more than the RDA for zinc), older infants who are exclusively breast fed, those with sickle cell disease, alcoholics Zinc is found in beef, crab, lobster, pork, baked beans, chicken, pumpkin seeds, yogurt, cashews, chickpeas and many other foods. Despite the importance of zinc, high doses of zinc negatively affect immune cells. There is no need to load up on zinc! What do you do to stay healthy? Having back pain and being told you have a slipped disc can be scary as hell! . But the term is nonsense as discs don’t actually ‘slip’ as they are firmly anchored to your vertebrae. . What actually happens is discs ‘bulge’ (medically described as herniated) from time to time due to many various factors! . However, just like other things that bulge in us from time to time they all tend to go down eventually... (keep it clean now) . I often describe a bulging disc a bit like a bulging belly we can get when we’ve been on that all inclusive holiday stuffing our faces with the good stuff 24/7! . When you gain weight and ‘bulge’ quickly you soon start to look and feel awful, this the same when a disc bulges quickly! . However, the good news is with some time, patience, and dedication to some lifestyle changes, and of course some good ol’ fashioned exercise you can get rid of that ‘bulge’ be it in a stomach or a lumbar disc! . Lots of research has shown a high rate of disc bulges reduce over time if people are encouraged to move and focus on other lifestyle factors. .
