Interview with Courtney Odell (MFA 2020) ___ *How has moving your studio home impacted your relationship to making? // How do you define studio? Studio’s are a lot more psychologically charged than most people might think. ... If your studio is new or if you have taken time off from working, you can feel very estranged from the space and the routine when you come back. I am certainly feeling estranged now but my silver lining is that I am finding that a studio doesn’t always have to be tethered to a physical space, it’s more of a mindset to explore and play. Anywhere or anything is currently my studio which I think there is good and bad to. *What was the most generative lesson you learned during your MFA? Lean in to the things that feel the most sticky and challenging. It’s not about necessarily coming to resolutions but just recognizing the complexity. *How have your peers influenced your work? My peers have hugely inspired my experimentations. I entered the program as an abstract painter and all of a sudden found myself surrounded by artists with such different backgrounds and art making practices. I feel that from a lot of the conversations and critiques I had with them, I was able to get outside my comfort zone and really play with different ways of making. Many of them taught me new mediums and methods as well.
