Hairballs! Hairballs are common but they are not normal. Believe it or not, there are some cats who never have them! And yes they still groom themselves. All the hair just passes through and comes out the other end, and that is what should be happening. Hairballs occassionally can be ‘just a hairball,’ especially in long haired cats that do not get brushed regularly. Most cats might have a hairball two to three times per YEAR. Any frequency greater than that could be a sig...n of a medical issue. A note on the vernacular: cats vomit hairballs, they do not cough them up. Hairballs are generally found in the stomach or small intestine, where they have been known to cause obstructions. (Coughing is also not normal and should be investigated promptly.) Don’t ignore hairballs! (I mean, you can’t ignore that sound, can you?) If your cat is having hairballs monthly, weekly or even daily call us and make an appointment. 562.439.4228
