May 9, 2018. Blunt force trauma consistent with vessel collision suspected cause of death of gray whale in San Francisco Bay. Sad! The cetacean was identified as a 44-foot adult female gray whale. The Marine Mammal Center has responded to more than 70 gray whales in its 43-year history. This is the third gray whale the Center has responded to in 2018. While undetermined is the most common cause of death of cetaceans reported by the Center’s research team, blunt force trauma... from ship strikes, malnutrition, trauma and entanglements are other leading causes. Gray whales are one of the most frequently seen whales in California. The cetaceans can be seen passing by California in December and January during their southern migration, and again in April and May on their northern journey. Gray whales are medium-sized whales, reaching up to 45 feet (14 m) in length, with the females usually being larger than the males. They are distinguishable by their gray coloration with white patches, mostly consisting of areas where barnacles and lice have attached themselves to the whales. The Eastern population found along the US and Canadian coast was delisted in 1994. Gray whales face the longest yearly migration of any whale at roughly 11,000 miles, traveling between Baja California and Alaska in a single trip. The U.S. Coast Guard indicates in its Local Notice to Mariners: "NOAA Sanctuaries requests a voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction until 15 Nov 18 within the San Francisco Traffic Separation Scheme (SF TSS). Vessels 300 gross registered tons or larger transiting the SF TSS are encouraged to transit at speeds not in excess of 10kts. These areas contain concentrations of endangered Blue, Humpback, and Fin Whales that are protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the National Marine Sanctuaries Act."
