We loved Amanda Gorman’s beautiful inaugural poem on Wednesday. As poet Jane Hirshfield perfectly put it, I also couldn’t help but think, while listening and watching, that here, right now, we’re seeing the kind of person, voice, thought, generosity, fearlessness, creative making, composure, and trust that our present country and future country are going to depend on . . . Gorman’s words look for new discoveries of sound, and find new meaning. They see their world more broadly and widely, because that’s how poetry works: the music raises different thoughts than you could have without it. They turn us towards our connection and not our divisions, because that’s also how poetry works. A world that recognizes how sound calls to sound is a world that knows itself part of a single, singing chorus.
