Most likely, immediate results of your Botox treatment (within 24 hours) are due to the slight inflammation from the procedure itself and not the effects of the Botox. Why is this? Botox binds to a protein at the end of your muscle nerves. Muscle nerves (AKA motor nerves) release a chemical message from your brain to make your muscles contract. When Botox binds to the nerve, it blocks that chemical message (acetylcholine) from being released. Hence, the muscle doesn’t con...tract. Science is incredible, right?! Even though Botox binds quickly to those nerves, the effects of it take several days to kick in. This is because that chemical messenger, acetylcholine, and the bound protein take time to quiet down. So, it takes a few days for the muscles to stop contracting and, therefore, your wrinkles and skin to smooth out and improve. Why do I see results in some areas faster than others from Botox? Botox diffuses downwards through skin and down to the muscle where it is taken up by the muscle nerves. The larger stronger muscles usually take a little more time to see results and smaller thinner muscles can be affected more quickly. Therefore, I always tell my patients to wait a full 2 weeks before getting a touch up, or adding more units, because in between your brows still may be kicking in, while your forehead is smooth and has already decreased movement.
