It’s been 3 months since Angela Madsen left us. I’ve been home from Hawaii for a month. I brought Angela’s ashes home a 1.5 weeks ago. I spent the first two... weeks at home inconsolable. I found depths of despair I didn’t realize existed. I found some distractions and finally think I have rounded the corner. I’m still not human most days. I’ve not wanted company. But every day is another day and I’m moving forward ever so slowly. No other updates at this time.

8/8/20 update Things are resolving and there is peace in that. BOAT-On 7/24/20 about 4:30pm Hurricane Douglas made a direct hit on RowofLife. Both tracking sys...tems failed after the hit. Miles Muzio, Weather Intel, theorized the following, .... Inside the hurricane eye wall with winds near 100 knots, I estimate that the Row of Life experienced seas with a significant wave height of 55 feet and maximum waves to 75 feet. Considering this, the vessel may have been destroyed by percussive wave action and is presumed lost.... We had hoped tracking would restart when the devices had a view of the sky, but it did not happen. The Coast Guard helped figure a search area for RowofLife life, but the tiny boat is difficult to find with tracking. SV Blue Moon decided it was worth a try and set out to see if RowofLife or debris from RowofLife could be located. They did not find either and are currently in route back to Oahu. DOCUMENTARY-Soraya Simi and her crew are continuing to work on the documentary. MEMORIAL-Our plan was to have Angela’s ashes cross the finish line in the recovered RowofLife boat, followed by a celebration of life at Hawaii Yacht Club. That can’t happen it part due to Covid. After talking with the grandkids we have formulated a new plan. I will take Angela’s ashes home and next year the grandkids will travel to Hawaii where we will have Angela finish her mission- crossing the finish, having a celebration of her life, and the carrying out her wishes of being buried at sea by the Coast Guard. Thanks to everyone for your kind words and support. Thank you to all who donated to our cause. That has allowed me to pay for Angela’s return and mortuary costs, the attempt to recover RowofLife, and will allow me to have her grandchildren travel to Hawaii so they can help Angela complete her mission. I could not have done this without the help of so many: all of you following and sending messages of support to me after and to Angela whilst she was rowing(she was so touched by the support); Wine Country Marines, SV Blue Moon, Jen and the Hawaii Yacht Club, Imperial Hawaii Resort, US Coast Guard, RowofLife Documentary Team, Polynesia Cargo Ship, Tahitian Consul, Iridium, Fiorentino Para Anchor, numerous ocean rowers/safety officers/race organizers, Angel City Sports, Miles Muzio (best weather guy ever), Credit union Christy, PVA-California chapter, Women veterans group, Annie, Candace, Valor Games Family, Ivana, my mom, kids, grandkids, Sarah holding down the fort, and so many more! I have had the best Village ever! I will be returning to California after the recovery boat returns and I’m able to finish up the business in Hawaii. That’s when the hard part starts. I never planned for a life without Angela Madsen. I am heartbroken. I’m really going to have to #RowHarder.

DOUGLAS: RowofLife played with Hurricane Douglas on Friday. Now it’s our turn. Captain Russ and Blue Moon crew are taking action to protect Blue Moon from the... storm. The track of the storm is appears it’s going to run along the North Shores of the island. We are set to be hit late afternoon/evening. 50-60 mph sustained winds and 90mph gust in Honolulu/Waikiki. For now we have some rain. We are safe and confident with our Ohana here at Imperial Resort. I’ll be checking in throughout the day.

It’s been exactly 1 month since I last spoke to Angela Madsen. It’s been a tough day so I had to #rowharder Angela will arrive at the port of Long Beach on the... cargo ship, Polynesia, this week and will be transferred to the Los Angeles Coroner for paperwork. Because of the covid que, she might be there a few weeks. I met with Soraya Simi about documentary progress and logistics. It appears it is on track with the film team working in Hawaii and Los Angeles. Tomorrow, I meet with Captain Russ and Crew Janell of SV Blue Moon in person. They will arrive in Hawaii to ready Blue Moon to make the journey to Recover RowofLife from the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The work that they have already put in has been amazing and time consuming. I’m so thankful. I took a walk in the empty park today and snapped a few photos.

No update, Update.... I keep thinking I’m going to have one and then not so much.... Angela is still on the cargo ship in the South Pacific. She will arrive b...ack in Long Beach, maybe or maybe not go to the coroner, go to the mortuary and be prepared to head to Hawaii for a burial at sea. So many details not resolved yet. The boat is adrift still, we know where it is.... we have a recovery plan in progress but aren’t able to share details at this point. If you have been wondering about my mask research... MY THEORY: I’ve been asked several times about what happened to Angela Madsen and it occurs to me I never shared my theory on Facebook. I spoke with Angela seve...ral times on Saturday by text and phone. The concern was a possibility that cyclone Boris was forming and the forecast models included some that could be problematic for Angela near the end of the week. At the beginning of her trip Angela lost the shackle at the bow (pointy end) that she was using to deploy her parachute anchor. She had been deploying the para-anchor from the stern (cabin side)since she lost the front shackle. The stern deployment works but angela preferred the bow deployment as the pointy end cuts through the waves and provides a better ride in extreme weather. Angela was positioned about as far from any land as possible. She was about 1200 miles from the mainland and 1300 miles from Hawaii. We started looking into the possibility of rescue based on where the the storm actually track. She was in an area of little marine traffic and it appeared the closest ship was 500 miles away. We decided that she needed to prepare for the worst, she may need to ride out a cyclone. If that was the case she thought it would be important to deploy the para anchor off the bow. We decided that she would have to jump into the water and reattach the shackle. The sea state was rough so she decided she would go in Sunday morning as that would be the best sea state. Her last post was 6/20, Saturday evening, Tomorrow is a swim day. I have to re shackle my bow anchor bridle in case there is a big storm. It came undone some time ago. I've been using the stern Anytime you leave your boat it’s a risky endeavor. I thought she would text me when she left the boat and when she hopped back on but no texts came. I texted several times throughout the day with no response. I watched the speed and trajectory of the boat and it seemed as if the boat was floating rather than being rowed- but if she went for the swim, she might have been tired and not rowing. I checked the main text inbox and found that she hadn’t communicated with anyone since Saturday night. It should be noted that were she was the satellite service was sketchy. I texted the sat phone, Garmin inreach, and the Iridium Go. I sent and email asking her to contact me or I would me notifying the coast guard. I felt a horrible dark weight in my chest. I had a picture of her in the water (in my head). I contacted Soraya Simi Sunday (6/21)afternoon/evening and we decided to contact the coast guard for guidance. They said they would work on finding a ship to divert to rescue her. Monday morning we were advised there were no ships close by but they found a ship who had diverted from their path and were headed toward Angela. They expected the ship to arrive in about 11 hours (9-10pm Monday 6/22). The US Coast Guard also decided to dispatch a C17 to fly over and report what they saw. The plane flew over about 8 pm but was unable to report their findings because of communication difficulties in that area. German Cargo ship Polynesia reached Angela’s location about 10:30pm 6/22. I received a phone call about 10:40 from the coast guard advising that angela had been located and was deceased. She had been found in the water tethered to her boat. There was no obvious trauma (I was inquiring to determine if she had struck her head but it did not appear that was the case) SO NOW MY THEORY: I believe Angela entered the water about 10:30am, Sunday 6/21. She was in board shorts and a sports bra(this I know). She was tethered to the boat. The water temperature was about 72 degrees. The plan was to hop in, replace the shackle, and hop back in the boat. Angela has never had trouble getting back into the boat from the water. The boat sits close to the water and she is crazy strong, I believe when she tried to get back in the boat her tether was caught on something that did not allow it enough slack for Angela to get back in the boat. She may have been in the water longer than planned, trying free the tether. I think that and possible hypothermia led to her demise. Because of her paraplegia she had little to no sensation in the lower half of her body. It’s possible that hypothermia was setting in before she even realized it. By the time she realized it was too late to recover. She may have gone unconscious or had a heart attack but ultimately it lead to her passing. Deb Hypothermia Hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Normal body temperature is around 98.6 F (37 C). Hypothermia (hi-poe-THUR-me-uh) occurs as your body temperature falls below 95 F (35 C). Someone with hypothermia usually isn't aware of his or her condition because the symptoms often begin gradually. Also, the confused thinking associated with hypothermia prevents self-awareness. Expected Survival Time in Cold Water Water Temperature Exhaustion or Unconsciousness in Expected Survival Time 7080 F (2127 C) 312 hours 3 hours indefinitely 6070 F (1621 C) 27 hours 240 hours 5060 F (1016 C) 12 hours 16 hours 4050 F (410 C) 3060 minutes 13 hours 32.540 F (04 C) 1530 minutes 3090 minutes <32 F (<0 C) Under 15 minutes Under 1545 minutes #rowharder The photo show the Polynesia in port in Tahiti. This is Angela Madsen. In less than three weeks, Angela leaves Los Angeles to row the Pacific Ocean alone. Yes, row. Yes, alone. That means no support boat. No ...motor. No sail. Only her arms. Imagine crossing 2,500 miles on your own. Imagine being alone for 3-4 months, having no one to talk to and no one to help you as you put yourself in one of the most physically vulnerable positions possible. It begs the obvious question: Why would someone do this? Well, as COVID19 escalates, one might find disappearing from the face of the earth and fending for yourself a reasonable response, but this is something Angela has devoted her life to, planning and preparing for this specific row for over six years. She has a mission, both personal and public, that will be revealed along the way. But, we need your help to do it! Indie filmmaking is almost as masochistic as ocean rowing, so if you can toss us $15 to help fund production, you’ll get to see the final film before anyone else igg.me/at/rowoflife ! You can also live-track her via GPS, shoot her a note via satellite text (totally free!), and follow along here @rowoflife

5/11/20, MONDAYWEATHER-It looks better on paper...winds were supposed to be lighter (not favorable-blowing her south East) but that is not what Angela Madsen i...s reporting from the boat. A5/10 8pm ...I rowed 12 hours against the same wind as yesterday B5/11 4am-Rough ride on para anchor tonight winds picked up as did the sea C5/11 11:49amWinds and sea still up fought but still had to para anchor some sunshine so will make water and maybe nap winds might go down? D5/11 1:20pmF ing wind put out para anchor just to do lunch and take break. Loose (sic)too much otherwise it's increased so I'm not making as much progress - Angela Madsen E5/11 3:19pmGonna try 2 on 2 off to fight this wind - Angela Madsen (referring to rowing 2 hours and resting 2 hours) F5/11 7:30pmAnother 12 hard crossing northwesterly winds to go west is not easy. The stronger the wind the more southwest I go (12 referring to 12 hours of rowing, also I think she means she is blowing southEast not southwest.) It’s not looking any better the next 3 days. Wind is blowing her south and East. She really needs to go due west and needs to fight being pushed south. We are hoping for tradewinds 5/19/20. WILDLIFE-Yesterday I posted a picture of a bird. I got confirmation from Angela that he landed on her deck to rest and poo. She said she had to swab the deck to clean up after her visitor.-pic below A couple days ago I posted a marine animal that Angela confirmed was a large blue dolphin-pic below Angel City Sports, Angela Madsen, The Imperial Hawaii Resort, Iridium Communications www.RowofLife.org

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Angela Madsen who turns 60 tomorrow May 10th! Apart from being the only paraplegic to row oceans, she is also the oldest. I don't know how you al...l intend to celebrate your 60th, but Angela picked rowing a vast ocean all alone, knocking back a shot of @koloarum and a Moon Pie at the stroke of midnight. We want to make sure she knows how many people are rooting for her. Here's how: Midnight tonight and all day tomorrow, please send Angela a happy birthday message via satellite text from our website ( www.rowoflife.com/pacificrow ). It's completely free, but you should include your name so she knows who it's from. Also, if you'd like to buy her a drink or a dessert or maybe a steak dinner, you can donate any amount you're able, and we'll make sure it goes in a special celebratory fund for her. :) We hope this will help Angela realize the support she's garnered WORLDWIDE and act as fuel for her to continue this incredible feat of human ability and endurance.

Happy Monday 5/4/20Day 10 Angela Madsen has rowed 229 nautical miles (264 miles). She is pretty much headed south due to wind but she should hit a current tha...t will take her west around or south of Isla Guadalupe. I spoke with Angela on the Iridium Satellite Extreme Phone yesterday afternoon. WEATHER-She said the wind and seas are vicious and she had a few scary moments. She says all she sees are whitecaps. The water is very salty and she has to constantly clean the solar panels, this and clouds has caused her not to be able to harvest as much power as she would like. The weather has been so bad she has not been able to sit on the sliding rowing seat (she gets knocked off the seat). She has been sitting on the deck and using the Fiorentino para-anchor bag to sit on. She says it’s super comfy. So Fiorentino Para Anchor you make a great para-anchor that can double for a deck cushion. Waves have been crashing over the top of the boat. This especially problematic at night when you can’t see the waves coming. She got swamped yesterday and said it made the deck like a kiddie pool. The good news is the water is warmer than where she started. I asked for pictures but they don’t always show how bad it is because she is so close to the water. I told her to put it on a selfie stick but she is afraid it would be lost. The sea state is such she it trying not to move around much or pulling herself into a standing position for fear she might get tossed into the sea. She does have a safety line attached to her at all times but it can be difficult to climb back in the boat. WILDLIFEyesterday angela saw a sea turtle swim by. He had a big piece of seaweed he was pulling with his mouth. Angela was trying to decide if that was his dinner or if he was trying to camouflage himself from the sharks. Ok, back to cleaning out my brothers garage. I will try to get another update in later.....Deb

Messages from Angela Madsen about conditions 5/1-3 5/1/20-Friday 7pmHad to give a few degrees for safety. Only thing I can do is run with them in; This means you will see the boat going southeast instead of southwest I need to be well south of Guadalupe to catch trade winds inreachlink.com/MSUWP4B (31.5274, -119.2349) - Angela Madsen 5/3/20, Sunday 11:51am1 hour break then back to row; I can actually row across this crap now to make some west inreachlink.com/QJ7KEHR (30.8267, -118.8215) - Angela Madsen This is what led to the photo below asking Miles Muzio for good news.

UPDATE FROM ANGELA I received a voicemail message and then an Iridium Go phonecall from Angela Madsen. She still has not been to sleep. Her plan was to sleep ...when she got past Catalina but it is really foggy out there so she doesn’t feel comfortable to sleep. The winds changed to favorable and the fog came in as did WILDLIFE. She said she has seen 1000 dolphins, 2 whales and a couple sea lions. Since the wind/fog change. The TRACKING went off again today but we figured out the problem. When the tracker is charged and unplugged from the charger it auto turns itself off. So now when she unplugs it she will make sure to turn it back on. The 3rd photo is what it looks like when she is moving and the tracker is off. TRACKER MESSAGES: she said she is getting all your messages, she has read them all, but can’t reply right now. She is tired and the seas are super choppy. She appreciates everyone’s messages and will hopefully be able to reply when she gets on a regular schedule and away from land. See more
