Did you know Carlsbad had its first female mayor in 1960? Yep, Jane Sonneman, served as a City Council Member from 1960 to 1962. She was a strong proponent of... managing growth in our young city (Carlsbad became a city in 1952) and was a Planning Commissioner prior to joining the City Council. In addition to her civic duties Mayor Sonneman was a German teacher, real estate broker, and co-owner with her husband of a bakery and the Carlsbad Theater on State Street. Thanks to all of the extraordinary women leaders, past and present, who have helped shape our great city. See more
