#BlackHistoryMonth: More than 75% of US Army soldiers-drivers of the famed #WWII Red Ball Express were African Americans. At its peak in late 1944, the crucial truck convoy system transported up to 12,500 tons of supplies each day and ran nearly 6,000 heavy trucks per day. Once the U.S. Army broke out of Normandy following the D-Day landings in France, it was these truck drivers, riding around on hard seats, unheated Studebaker, General Motors, Ford, White, and Dodge truck...s, who ran hard on the heels of the Army as they chased the Germans out of France and back into Germany. The Red Ball Express was trucking's great contribution to the Allied Victory in World War II. And it wouldn’t have been possible without the sacrifice and dedication of brave African-American soldiers risking their lives daily. #Transportation #Trucking
