Stored Product Insect Forensics!!! Have you ever been asked by a client if you can determine if an insect infestation originated within food packages or came from an external source? These pictures will assist you in performing an analysis of insect penetration in various types of food packaging. Bottom line, the opening of the insect penetration will be larger on the side the insect originated from. In other words, in containers such as plastic spice jars, the opening will b...e larger on the inner wall if the insect originated from the product within the packaging, and vice-versa if the insect penetrated from the outside trying to access the food source inside the jars. In multilayer packages, you may observe multiple attempts to enter/exit the food packaging when the insect gives up and attempts at another location. You will also see "scratch marks" on the side of the packaging the insect originated from. In polyethylene packages, the packaging will be frayed, and will show if the insect entered or exited just by looking at the fraying direction.
