Are you ready for the Spring Concert? Our middle schoolers, under the able direction of our virtuosic Mr. Teagle, are working very hard in rehearsals to prepare for next Tuesday evening's big event. Featuring songs that celebrate Broadway musicals old and new (yes, even Hamilton!), these will be energetic, entertaining performances you won't want to miss.... We hope to see you at the concert next Tuesday, May 9, in the sanctuary at Upper Campus, at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided beforehand. There's still time to pencil it in! All are welcome and invited. And unlike Hamilton, admission is absolutely free!

Earlier this year, one of our talented 5th grade writers was a winner of the The Asian Pacific Fund's Growing Up Asian in America 2016 contest. The Asian Pacific Fund is a non-profit foundation dedicated to strengthening the Bay Area's Asian and Pacific Islander Communities through helping donors achieve their philanthropic goals, supporting organizations that serve our most vulnerable, and raising awareness about pressing community needs. In addition, the Asian Pacific Fun...d distributes grants and scholarships to students and social service organizations. Carisa took part in the Growing Up Asian in America 2016 contest, sponsored by the Asian Pacific Fund. There is a different contest theme for each year. This year's theme was in honor of the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Students from all across the Bay Area submitted entries in art, essays, and videos to answer the question, "Who would you award a gold medal to, and why?" Carisa wrote about her grandmother who fled from China at the age of twenty to seek educational and intellectual freedom. Carisa's essay was chosen among the winners and honorees who wrote about or illustrated the courage and tenacity of the human spirit. Students from the Bay Area described the contributions of individuals who are a positive influence in their lives. Carisa attended an awards ceremony held at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. She also attended the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration Luncheon hosted by NBC Bay Area, where local community heroes were also honored for their contributions to the Bay Area.
