Chad: One of my old professors has a great blog. He is the head of the Religion department at Vanguard University. This is from his blog for today. It must have come as a great shock to those who had rolled the dice on the Rabbi from Nazareth as leading candidate for the messiah of political and military deliverance when, having first ridden into town on a donkey a lowly beast of burden, he made his way to the temple and not to the citadel or the courts. Proceeding to the ...courtyard that had been built for inquiring Gentiles to pray, but which pragmatism had renovated into a marketplace for the traveling faithful, he over-turned the tables and drove out the money-changers all the while proclaiming that this was to be a place of prayer a place where the foreigners could come to meet with God. His first concern was the outsider. Had they been paying attention, they would not have been surprised but they, like we, saw of him only what they wanted to see. The disciples, meanwhile, were still reeling from the withering of an unfruitful fig tree. The more astute among them were, perhaps, beginning to make the connection between the two events the withering of what was unfruitful.
