This is the first Geek Week hosted by UCR Residential Life! . . . .... Although it’s being hosted by Res Life, UCR Geek Week will strive to be a campus-wide, week-long series of events designed to enrich the student experience through celebration of geek and nerd culture in all its forms. We strongly believe that all individuals can ‘geek out’ about anything, and this is an effort to cultivate a safe and inclusive environment for students who might have felt stigmatized by their hobbies and interests. The board of UCR Staff Assembly was saddened to learn of the passing of William J. Sovich, known to most of his colleagues as Bill, on Sept. 18, 2017. Our condo...lences go out out to his partner, Ernest Alvarez, and to everyone who knew and worked with him. Bill was the subject of a feature story on the UCR Today website in 2014. Since then, he had been promoted to assistant director of the CNAS Undergraduate Academic Advising Center. We've linked that story below. Barbra J. Wallace, director of the CNAS Undergraduate Academic Advising Center, was kind enough to share her thoughts on Bill, and you are invited to share your thoughts in the comments below. -------- "William J. Sovich was an exceptional academic advisor that I had the pleasure to work with for nearly ten years. Bill began his career at UCR in the Psychology academic advising office in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences and a few years later applied for one of the first supervising advisors at UCR in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences Undergraduate Academic Advising Center (CNAS UAAC). At one time or another he was the lead advisor for Biology; Biochemistry; Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology; and Microbiology which includes two of the largest majors in CNAS. He worked across the campus in his efforts at managing CNAS Undergraduate Scholarships and served as the CNAS UAAC Coordinator of Recruitment and Outreach events. Bill was an exceptional academic advisor, supervisor, and mentor. Bill hired and trained numerous academic advisorssome of whom still work for CNAS and others who have gone on to work in the School of Business, the Graduate School of Education, the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences as some who have left campus for positions at Chapman University, UC Irvine, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Bill was dedicated to his own professional development as well as those of others. Bill participated robustly in the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and other professional development conferences. Bill was dedicated to the philosophy of assessment of advising and even won a highly competitive scholarship to attend the annual NACADA Assessment Institute. Bill shared his expertise by presenting his method for using the CNAS UAAC iEval results to coach academic advisors at a NACADA annual conference and co-presented on advising philosophies using theories from the field of psychology. For the past three years Bill served as the co-leader of UCR Professional Academic Advisor Certification Course ensuring professional development opportunities and training for advisor at all levels from all over campus."
