Today, on the first Sunday of September, the city of Venice is hosting her annual Regata Storica, which she has celebrated for centuries. As one of Europe's major maritime republics, her power and splendor is honored with a parade of decorated 16th century boats in the 'Voga alla Veneta'. Gondoliers, donned in historical costumes recreate the traditional marriage of Venice as "Queen of the Adriatic" to Neptune "God of the Sea" where the Doge would ceremonially wed Venice to her betrothed, by tossing a wedding ring into the lagoon each year in hopes of favorable conditions for the city. There are four races throughout the day with the finish line located in front of the Ca' Foscari palace.
